| DESIGN NAME: Xicang Market PRIMARY FUNCTION: Book INSPIRATION: The choice of the objects to be used as stalls, the way of displaying, the daily design of the handwritten signs and the relationship between people and objects, are the most prominent features the book want to show. Therefore, the idea is to minimize the design and restore the scene of the marketplace by every independent chapter. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Observe the Transitional China from the Disappearing Market in Urban Areas.Xi'an, the ancient city in China, is in a great change. A market like Xicang market, held at the same time and same place every week, preserving all the vivid civil life here,,rarely exists now in a city. The design of the book also well conformed to the creator's intention,simply a presentation. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Xicang market has held two exhibitions, with books and image record. The vendors and local residents of Xicang Market and the local government were invited to visit. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2015 in Xi'an and finished in August 2018 in Xi'an,and was exhibited in Xi'an urban memory museum in October 2018. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The whole book is divided into eight chapters: location, market, signs, stalls, oral accounts, goods, price and vendors according to the main elements of a local market. Therefore, the idea is to minimize the design and restore the scene of the marketplace (e.g. the supplement part) by every independent chapter. For example, the paper of advertising flyers frequently appeared in Xicang market is the option as the paper of certain chapter of the book to reflect the character of a market by its special texture.
