DESIGN NAME: Puls Vario
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Office
INSPIRATION: Innovation and creativity can’t simply be produced on demand. These are processes that have to be enabled and supported, not just in the way that people work but also in the spaces where they work. Therefore, at Puls Vario the office design is specifically based on the latest cognitive research of how innovation occurs to stimulate and expedite people’s ability to develop new ideas into innovative products.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The German engineering firm Puls got an opportunity to expand the team and strengthen their engineering capacity by opening a new research and development office in Vienna. The newly formed team required a new workplace that was a real innovation powerhouse – the space that fully enables creativity and supports research process. Along with creating a workspace environment that stimulates invention, the design process also enabled an internal restructuring and strengthened the Puls team spirit.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The concept of the Austrian Vierkanthof is translated into a workspace, divided into four zones, each designed to support different stages of the innovation process. Retreat is designed for individual research and deep thinking. Dialog is where first ideas are developed through informal discussion and collaboration. Create, the high tech lab, is where engineers prototype, test and develop new products. The final area Share is for sharing the results of prototyping and inspiring colleagues with ideas.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2017 in Vienna and was completed in March 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Designed in close collaboration with the new R&D team and the HR project team at Puls HQ in Munich, the Vienna office is inspired by the Vierkanthof, a traditional Austrian farmhouse structure arranged around a square-shaped courtyard where various experts work closely together to achieve common goals. It is designed to be a real powerhouse to foster creativity, new developments, innovation and deepening of individual expert knowledge.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The office is 1000 square meters large.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: At Puls Vario, the team was convinced that a traditional hierarchical structure was a hindrance to fast paced innovation. As a result, the company introduced a new structure. Only three job roles now exist – product owners, coaches and subject matter experts. This structure enables individuals to seek assistance and mentorship from more experienced specialists and also gives them the freedom to rapidly develop ideas without the bottleneck of a hierarchy-based sign off.
CHALLENGE: The main creative challenge was how the newly founded company could differentiate themselves from the competition. The answer was by creating a unique work environment that not only enables continuous creativity and supports the research and development team in their search for innovative new products, but even challenges the company structure and organisation in order to create an innovation hub.
