DESIGN NAME: Shape
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Infrastructure Development
INSPIRATION: The future sustainable growth of society will not be successful without the infrastructure innovation, and it is important to consider how the progress of technology will influence with it, such as production efficiency. Based on the principle of opening, sharing, and collaborating, my team will explore what role of local residents play in the future community development. As a resident in the city, how people can have the opportunity to participate and improve their surrounding environment.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Under the system of Shape, it will not only be focusing on the finical involvement, but also devotes to provide a platform for each individual user to collaborate, create and shape their community. With the big data analyzation, it breaks the difficulty of traditional construction plan development. Besides of contributing to the local residents, Shape will also ease the burden of city construction department as well as stimulate the related businesses, like supplies market and population employment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In the first step, the user can establish a group based on the other existing projects, and reach the minimum number of participants, such as live streaming to inform the other users. Once the requirement is met, the system will provide several possible construction plans for users to vote for based on the preferences. Within the step, the members can be available to discuss in the chatting room, and administrator is allowed to leave key comments for the system to generate. After this, the system will show a final construction plan, and list the possible punch list based on a similar project. The group user can choose a professional coordinator to help implement the rest of steps, for example, beginning construction and communicating with the city department. Finally, the system will offer qualified laborers to help, and order supplies from the Shape market. Other users can participate in the project by donating time, labor, funds or materials. After the project is completed, each participant will receive a corresponding award or identity based on their contribution.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This is a 14-week (Sept 2018 – Dec 2018) design project in Pasadena, Los Angeles.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interface, Interaction and User Experience Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Within a good ecosystem, every species will be assigned with different tasks, and form cooperation in the end. The main technique in Shape is collaborative innovation, and it will also touch on sharing economic, big data analyzation and virtual community establishment.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Shape will be designed as cell phone application based on Android and IOS system. It will also have a web version to operate.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Nowadays, the local city department acts as the main role to make the decision of city construction plan. However, the local residents may have a better idea of what kind of community they would like to live in. Because of the different opinions on community development, the dispute between local residents and the city department is always happening. By trying to reach the sustainable development goal for city infrastructural, we believe it is important to provide an opportunity for community members to improve their living environment with city department together. The research will cover the user interview, market analyzation, accessibility, digital and physical product development from the local to global scale.
CHALLENGE: In the design process of Shape, the biggest challenge we face is how might we establish a simple infrastructural system to satisfy local city department, residents and other stakeholders? Moreover, each different person is an individual unit, for example, a man may have a lot of energy but he lacks enough professional knowledge to build a construction plan. Therefore, we are exploring a method to connect as well as encourage people to participate in a particular community-built project together.
