DESIGN NAME: rhed Built Prototypes
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Boat
INSPIRATION: The context of the Canadian outdoor experience coupled with time I spent in the Mediterranean with friends exploring the southern part of Italy by boat.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The rhed built project boat house, featured a co-generation power speed boat which was an integral component rural boat house living experience.
The concept of the co-generation system was created using a natural gas heating and cooling system that would generate electricity as by product.
The boat is the receptor for that system, absorbing all of the surplus energy to power the boats electrical drive systems along with the boats internal stern mounted solar delivery system. The boat also acts as a external source of power reversing it’s use, when required, to provide supplementary energy for the boat house.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The boat operation is via an electrical drive system with an electronic throttle, key switch, high powered electronics motor and touch screen display for all boating operations. The system allows for smooth uninterrupted delivery of power with an emergency shut, along with a directional side jet system to augment docking and maneuvering in tight spaces.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was initiated after Salone del Mobile in 2011, after which the first prototype of the project was exhibited at the Interior Design Show (IDS) in 2012, where the concept exhibition received a Gold Award for Best of Show

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Created from a sketch, the drawings where transferred into CAD then developed further using a 3D max system. The 3D. Max system ultimately generated a 3D printed prototype. The same 3D max system was finally used to fabricated the full scale fiberglass model of the boat for display at IDS for the prototype launch.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The vast amount of research was completed in conjunction with our local design team and boating engineers to establish hull capability and endurance. The computerized simulations developed through the 3D max system helped to analyze the boats capability in on water situations evidence in the video simulations.
CHALLENGE: Two main issues were difficult 1. The overall concept of the boats integration with the co-generation system and the reversed co-generation application. 2. The hull design of the boat was unorthodox and adjusted to create the hull wings for stability and battery storage.
