PRIMARY FUNCTION: Japanese Restaurant
INSPIRATION: The vision of the client was to create a Japanese-style venue, while also expressing the elements of Chinese culture simultaneously, as well as featuring natural material. The traditional material with strong connections to arts and crafts of these two countries covers the walls and ceilings to create an intimate environment. The symbolic and sustainable material lined space evokes the feeling of dining within a bamboo grove, while intimately links Japan and China.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Located in Beijing's central business district, Dongshang is a contemporary Japanese restaurant and bar with wide selections of sake and Japanese whisky, composed of bamboo in many different forms and sizes. The main dining is surrounded by bamboo strips fixed by brass nails on the walls, while on its ceiling, a transparent canopy made of bamboo sticks is suspended over the tables to create a sense of intimacy.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Guests enter through an intermediate space to maintain a distance between a glaring public hallway and an intimate dining area, which features bamboo strips on the walls and a succession of refined bamboo arches on the ceiling. The entry corridor also features lights which passes through the bamboo strips at the ceiling and illuminates the walls like sunshine filtering through tree leaves.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The history of planting and using bamboo in Japan and China can be traced back 8,000 years, and bamboo symbolizes the anti-urban philosophy in Chinese classic story, the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove. The natural healing power of bamboo offers guests a calming experience and bring people together similar to the ancient narrative. Because of its high growth rate, strength and cost-effectiveness, bamboo is also one of the most distinctive material solutions of the sustainable design in Asia.
CHALLENGE: Dongshang invites guests on a story of traditional design motifs and crafting techniques of the two countries, while embracing the classical aesthetics through assemblage of bamboo and other natural materials. The fine dining destination is not just a restaurant or bar but an experience of dining within a bamboo grove.
