DESIGN NAME: Nyoi Nyokki
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Japanese Izakaya Pub
INSPIRATION: After the former coverings are removed, the part of the original aged wall is discovered, and thus the aged wall is preserved behind steel plate shelves for liquor bottles to embrace the ancient aspects. Extending from interior to exterior, the language of black steel continues onto the outside stair to invite guests. Nyoi Nyokki evokes the traditional Japanese aesthetics of wabi-sabi through an assemblage of the aged wall, natural wood and steel.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Located on the 2nd floor of an old 2-story building in Beijing, Nyoi Nyokki is a Japanese izakaya pub, clad with wooden louvers, covering the walls and ceilings to create an intimate environment. The bar counter features wood louvers and glass pendant lights on the ceiling to define a spatial hierarchy for the most dominant part of the izakaya pub. The centerpiece of the place is the original aged wall revealed from former coverings behind illuminated liquor bottles.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Guests enter through an intermediate space to maintain a distance between a chaotic street and a cozy dining area, the entry corridor features wood louvers on the wall and ceiling to create an inviting atmosphere. According to the existing windows at the higher position than usual, the far side of the pub is one step higher, creating a sense of intimacy.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The primary research background of the project is about the site analysis. The eye-catching design is one of the key elements of the izakaya pub because Nyoi Nyokki is situated on the second floor in Beijing's Xinyuanli area where many Japanese restaurants and bars are gathered along the street, as well as the entrance stair tucked away on a side street.
CHALLENGE: Due to the research, the ceiling elements of the bar counter extended to the window-side guide street's eyes upward, while the design of black steel continues from interior to exterior to invite customers walking outside. Contrasting with the local street and building facade, the hidden Japanese pub brings a calm and warm atmosphere.
