DESIGN NAME: Guoju Garden Palace
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: Stone trails, scenery with rocks, and water combine to create an open, natural and stress-free outdoor landscape. The towering and delicate deciduous cypress trees are planted to echo the delicacy and elegance of the residence. Instead of using a large number of rigid pavements, meticulous planting and use of stone materials is rare among the residential landscapes for congregated housing. An extensive amount of care and maintenance is required to reproduce a natural forest-like landscape.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This a plan for the public landscape of a congregated housing residence. As the outdoor and indoor public facilities correspond with one another, the fluent and free-natured design uses the most natural materials to make the residence seemingly “situated next to a creek and forest”.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The European-style coffee area is composed of large cherry and elm trees along with a large number of small shrubs such as small-leafed rhododendrons. There are herbaceous and colorful plants such as irises and crabapples located beneath the shrubbery that also surround the environment.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in Apr. 2018 in Taichung City, Taiwan.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: On the side of the building, a large horizontal patch of plants is planted along with various naturally-aligned stones to create a natural marsh-like environment. The slow-flowing water, pebbles and algae; the rocks and various water plants, and the stone path make the garden seem like trail through a forest. The exterior has extraordinary deciduous cypress trees that make the landscape resemble a forest and the landscape becomes even more beautiful with the lights on at night.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The space is 1560 square meters

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The green scenery nearly envelops the coffee area and a minimum of rigid pavements are used to illustrate the area’s natural state. The flow of the area is naturally curved and layers of green highlight the area’s tranquil trail, which is paved with slates of stone or stepping stones.
CHALLENGE: The round and triangular shrubs provide a varied rich visual experience and the distinct levels of planting allow people to experience a sea of green as they stroll through the garden.
