DESIGN NAME: Balance
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewelry
INSPIRATION: My pieces exemplify organic forms but are also composed of geometric, repetitive shapes. The circular shapes and repetitive domes symbolize cycles, union and the complementarity of the two elements. I was inspired by the Suminagashi, a Japanese paper marbling technique, which involves floating color inks on the surface of water and resulting in circular rings and patterns. When I first discovered Suminagashi I was amazed and intrigued by the marbled patterns and the washed out effects on paper.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: These necklaces I chose to make paper-thin porcelain and plique a jour enamel as the precious stones which I prong set them individually. The intricate swirling patterns and circular rings symbolize cycles and the constant impact of one object upon another. Within these pieces there is no sense of opposites or imbalance. As part of my concept and process I also affixed a LED light behind the diffuser. The light that travels through the translucent porcelains and enamels emphasize the contrast.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: I have affixed a LED switch on the back of the pendant, so audience could turn it on or off anytime. when the LED light on, the necklace will perform better under a dark room.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The necklaces started in Dec 2016 in San Francisco and finished in May 2017 in SF, and and was exhibited in Artistar in Feb 2018.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Sometimes we discover our influences after and not before we create art. When I take a close look at my artwork I see themes of Chinese philosophy such as Yin Yang, which symbolizes how opposite or contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent. This concept stems from my father who works as a Feng Shui consultant in Taiwan. He analyzes classical Chinese Yi-Ching Theory, or The Book of Changes. Having been exposed to such ideas through my father, I became increasingly interested in the idea of complementarity of Yin-Yang.
CHALLENGE: Exploring different kinds of materials and technologies.
