PRIMARY FUNCTION: Flexible Floor Lamp
INSPIRATION: The primarily inspiration came from folding studies, structures and techniques. The idea to create bodies out of plane materials and the possibility to build them in continuous chains in any length. It improves the production process and the range of application. This folding concept allows to create an endless string of vessels, made out of multi-layered single strips.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Vertebra results from studies in folding structures and techniques. Plane materials can be merged together to a multi-layered strip. This sandwich construction than can be folded to a continuous chain of single bodies, representing the lampshades. The lampshade supports a goose-neck rod to keep its shape nice and vice versa, the rod gives stability to the folding. Vertebra satisfy your individual creativity in an unlimited range of deforming. A cast iron base enables stability and a solid stand.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: With the right level of stability and freedom of movement there are many ways to shape this lamp individually. Rings, waves, straight or twisted shapes, it ensures always a well defined curve.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The lamp shade is a sandwich construction, consists out of multiple, flexible and rigid layers merged together to a single stripe. It is than folded by a specific concept to receive a chain of vessels connected with joints. The support represents a goose-neck rod. In each vessel LEDs provide the light and are connected throw the vessel with the rod for maximized freedom of shaping the lamp. The base is made of cast iron and let the lamp stand safe and heavy on the ground.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The way of creating voluminous object out of plain materials by the use of folding constructions is a smart way to minimize the amount of steps in production and therefore in costs and time. The idea of creating endless chains of vessels connected by joints in only one process is a huge improvement and offers plenty more options in many other fields of application. The solution of Vertebra showcase one of these applications and combines contemporary complex design with a well elaborated process of cost-efficient, resource-saving production.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to meet the needs of a fully functional floor lamp constructed out of one single plane sheet. The unique folding concept had less tolerance in size and thickness to fulfill all the requirements like volume of each vessel or bend radius. The idea is to use a simple technique and create complexity in shape and function by using a simply plane sheet of any material.
