DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Sinus

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Sun Lounger

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration came from the limited position of common sun lounger, where the user has to fit in one of the few pre-adjustments. The human body appears in such a diversity, different shapes and sizes that focus on individualism seemed to be a challenge to face. A sun lounger which fits to the users size and not the other way around should be the exercise. The solution is a design, easy to handle and comfortable to relax on, made out of diverse local wood and lightweight aluminium hinges.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A sun lounger which fits to the users size and not the other way around should be the exercise. The unlimited number of individualized lying positions signifies the special feature of Sinus. The way you adjust angle and position is relocated to its ends instead of underneath. The completely different adjustment concept goes without a snapping raster and operates with tension, not compression. Inspired from a neck pillow or a massage table, your head will rest on a smooth shaped, wooden ring.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
This sun lounger offers an entirely new way of rapidly modifying the lying position continuously. The focus is on tension and operates without any pre-adjustments. The framework stands safe on either hard or soft ground and features a placement area for all the small goods you sometimes carry with you enjoying a calm rest under the sky.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in June 2016 in Berlin, Germany

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Sinus is made out of diverse local wood and lightweight aluminium hinges. The wavy carrying frame consists of severel rods symmetrically connected. The lying surface is composed of four parts connected with each other by using spring-loaded joints, which can be fixed to stiffen the frame. To fix diverse lying positions a wrapped rope ensure stability in tension, as well four rails prevent rotating and twisting of the lying frame and keep it in line.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Length 2088 x Width 660 x Height 360 mm Two individual parts, lying grille and base can be disconnected for transportation.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The inequality of the amount of lying position a common sun lounger offers, to the shape and size of the individual. A design concept for a sun lounger to fit the human body and not the other way around. Therefore various concepts were needed to change the perception of common procedures and to create an entire new way of operation. The focus was to find infinitely various solutions and replace the idea of pre-settings, which successfully took shape with the concept of SINUS.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to stay on the same ordinary level of handling, but change its kind of operation to achieve more freedom of lying positions.

NAME:
Christoph Guenther

PROFILE:
Christoph is a designer who works and lives in New York. He always understood design as a combination out of different perspectives and professions. Early on he felt the urge to create a holistic design that combined architecture, interior design, industrial/product design and fashion design. He was especially intrigued by the fact that, despite the complexity of each profession, they shared far more similarity than it seemed at first glance. Each of these categories has a common final objective that is deeply connected to human beings but differentiates in its relationship to the human body and the type of mental work required to accomplish it. However, if you combine all four approaches, you can begin to understand design in its completeness, observing and considering it from several different angles.
