DESIGN NAME: Iron Hive System
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular Shelving System
INSPIRATION: The project inspiration comes from the idea of repetitive geometrical elements that simulate the optical effect and complex polygonal shapes of a beehive structure, as well as that of other natural elements like atoms, cells or crystals. The goal was to create a modular system that recalls each of these elements in their strongest properties: the rigidity and lightness of abeehive, the flexibility of atoms, and duplicability of cells.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Iron Hive series is composed of individual modules that allow the user to classify, store and “grow” the storage solution as required. With the support of a wooden base, the modules also function well as side or night tables. When the modules are combined, they can form a bookshelf, a sideboard or any furniture desired.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The philosophy of this system is flexibility, this means you'll find the way to personalize it and make it match your needs, but also expand or modify it as required. Some modules could be easily removed from a bookshelf to be used as temporary stools (optional felt linings are designed for this purpose). From residential to commercial and hospitality this product can find an appropiate application.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2015 in Berlin. The development and testing process finished in December 2017. The final design is in production since gennuary 2018, it has been exhibited in INDEX design fair in March 2018 in Dubai and in London Design Fair in September 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Modules are realized by processing iron sheets, the use of metal allows to achieve an optimal structural strenght with a minimal thickness.
The laser cutted peices are bent and welded, the modules are finally powder coated
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The cubic geometry of the module, dimensions 330 x 330 x 330 mm, allows to store a wide range of different objects without waste of space.
Records, wine bottles, folders, magazines and most of the objects surronding us in every day life are confotably fitting.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: From the exploration of possible ways to use space, trough a series of instinctive sketches is emerging the idea of a module repetition. This process recalls to the observation of natural structures and the research of an essential geometry to match a contemporary, flexible and dynamic lifestyle. The support of the 3D modelling was an effective tool to define a functional geometry. Thanks to physical tests and prototypes the design has been enhanced by details following technical requirements.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was to find a connection system to link modules without interfering with the purity of the forms. The first prototype was assembled using magnets. Optically and in terms of stability this was a satisfying solution, but the presence of a magnetic field was still an obstacle to guarantee an all round application. The definitive solution came by emulating this appearance and converting magnets into stainless steel round nuts, so that every element is safely screwed together.
