DESIGN NAME: Ellips - MSI4
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fruit and Vegetable Scanner
INSPIRATION: Thanks to the precision and flexibility of Ellips grading technology, less fruit, and vegetable waste is produced. A device with such a goal requires accuracy and a design that fits into its working environment. In order to achieve such a design, we have immersed ourselves in the world of fruit processing and we got inspired by values as hygiene, precision and quality.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Ellips MSI4 can grade the quality of fruit based on scanning technology. This hi-tech application needs a design that fits but remains functional. The alignment of the integrated cameras must be very precise for good performance and fit into a housing that is smaller than its predecessor. Thanks to the unique suspension system, the scanner is able to scan from different angles. The result a robust design that can withstand its environment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The product consists of a specially designed housing containing two cameras that cooperate in the fruit grading process. One camera scans fruit from a horizontal angle and the other camera scans from a vertical angle. The cameras are equipped with hi-end techniques that can measure different variables of fruits and vegetables which helps in the grading process.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2016 in Helmond, The Netherlands and finished in 2018.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The product arose from an in-depth competitor analysis and extensive user research.
CHALLENGE: Making a design that fits in the product family but is still innovative and functional. In addition, the design must match the production requirements. Think of distance from the camera window in relation to the conveyor belt.
