DESIGN NAME: FlexSit
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Stool
INSPIRATION: The design was inspired by tumbler toys, which is unstable and fun. The concept of "Motion Seating" was also injected into this stool.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: FlexSit, born to be 'unstable', is not only a rocking stool with a range of options included but also a fun and ergonomic seating solution for the home, office and classroom. In consideration of practicability and sitting experience, the design of a spherical bottom was applied to the stool in order to provide a extremely different but interesting way of 'unstable' sitting. Moreover, the method of modularity offers customers the possibility of personal customization. The vibrant color matching also perfectly meets the needs of young generations.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: FlexSit appears simple, but it is packed with useful features. The ergonomic knitted top, the solid wood pillar and the bottom with a counterweight could be easily assembled through the screw threads. The seat can be adjusted in both color and height by changing different pillars and bottoms. People can easily sway and spin without falling off on FlexSit, which actively stretches the lumbar and avoids sedentary symptoms.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Nov 2017 in Shanghai and finished in Dec 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The bottom is basically made of PP with a PC layer wrapped outside as well as a metal counterweight core inside. The pillar in the middle is made of solid wood and the PP seat is covered by woven fabric.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Several studies have pointed to the dangerous effects of prolonged sitting. Our bodies were never made to sit hunched over a desk or computer all day. The negative effects on our circulation, respiration and posture show up in the statistics of how many people suffer from diseases and back problems from sitting.
This type of flexible seating aims to create a learning and working environment that more truly reflects the nature of the hyperconnected, ever-changing, globalized world that we now live in. It's a environment that inherently requires people to master skills such as flexibility, creativity, problem-solving and collaboration.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the design was engineering mechanics. We need to find the proper ratio and materials to ensure the safety. In order to lower the center of gravity, a counterweight bottom was designed to guarantee the functionality.
