DESIGN NAME: Pivot
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Shelf
INSPIRATION: Adaptable Living is a concept that shows how allowing the individual to customize and change their furnishings around their own lifestyle, creates a new connection and awareness to one's own furniture and creating a comfortable and fun living environment. It is inspired by Japanese small housing, which minimizes the usage of space with interesting designs and ideas.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Flexibility and personalization as the key features, it can be placed in multiple places around the home or office. The shelves can be positioned into a straight position; catty corner to match the angle of the walls; or simply become a partition. The main frame allows it to function as a clothes hanger, or simply as a personal home gallery where photos and art can be displayed inside the frame. The inspiration for this feature is to allow the user to experience a whole new way of interacting with their furniture and living space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Pivot allows people to place it anywhere they like, which allows for multiple placement ideas. This is also because when pivoted, it can be placed easily into a corner. If placed against a wall, the inner section can be used as a space for photos and art, creating a miniature art space in your home or office.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in early 2018 and was exhibited during the ‘SaloneSatellite 2018 - Salone del Mobile Milano’.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A lot of research was put into being able to create a pivot shelf out of wood that could work when moved into different positions and withstand its own weight. Most of the research comes from my understanding and experience of Japanese living. In Japan we have limited space and we must make use of the space we have in order to live comfortably.
CHALLENGE: Creating a functional pivot was very crucial for the all-around success of the unit. It needed to be able to pivot easily and could stand at an even level at all positions without tilting to one side.
