| DESIGN NAME: Love PRIMARY FUNCTION: Brooch INSPIRATION: The designer drew the inspiration from a poem by Gibran. The base is etched with Gibran's poem about love: Love gives naught but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not nor would it be possessed; For love is sufficient unto love. The movement depicts love is selfless. Lovers attract to each other like planets revolving with gravity. They hug each other and spin forever. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: LOVE is a kinetic brooch that consists of silver, moonstone, garnet, and iolite. The jewel is distinctive of the capability to spin with body movement. The pivot structure allows it to delicately transform while wearing. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Love is an eye-catching piece, when it spins with wearer's body movement. Also, it's a secret after people get closer and find out the hidden message on the base. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This jewel was created in April 2016 in CYC studio, NY. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The jewel is totally handmade, and fabricated with soldering, stone setting, etching and oxidizing. The materials consist of silver, moonstone, garnet, iolite and steel pin. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 2.5" x 2.5" x 0.8" TAGS: Brooch, SterlingSilver, MoonStone, Garnet, Iolite, Etching, Patina, LiverofSulfur RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The designer creates pieces from personal experience of life. He wanted to express an idea about the relationship between people. He observed the story he heard and the nutrition from reading. He was fascinated with Gibran's aspect of love, and decided to represent the emotion and tension between lovers. CHALLENGE: The challenge is visualizing an abstract concept into a concrete piece. A relationship is not always fixed and steady. On the contrary, it's a dynamic balance. Therefore, the designer puts in lots of effort to design the mechanism in order to fully realize the concept. He created mock-up to experiment the weight and dimension for an ideal result. To fabricate and assemble all the parts together, it relied on an experienced skill set and a clear vision of plan beforehand.
