| DESIGN NAME: Luminous PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting and Sound System INSPIRATION: Luminous is inspired by nature and follows ergonomic design principles. The indirect lighting system in the product works in the same way as the sky in nature, the sky distributes light across a large surface and creates desirable ambient light. The sound system of the product also transmits the sound to the listener in the same way as it is in nature, in multilayer levels, and from all directions. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Luminous offers an ergonomic lighting solution and spherical surround sound system in a single product and aimed to make a new experience for the users by creating an emotion that they desire to feel. The sound system used in the product, placed above the listener's head and creates surround dome-shaped sound in the room without the need for wiring and installing multiple speakers around the place. As a pendant light, Luminous has been designed to create indirect lighting. This lighting system provides a soft, uniform, and low-contrast light which prevents glare and vision problems. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Luminous consists of two main parts: 1) Lighting and sound unit, 2) Bluetooth Audio Adapter, that allows the user to interact with the lighting and sound unit, and stream sound and music from a TV, game console, microphone, memory stick, or Blu-ray player wirelessly. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Luminous uses LED light sources along with acrylic diffuser. It is equipped with an Ambient Light Sensor that adjusts the brightness of the LEDs on the basis of the ambient light level in the room. The sound system consists of a sound processor and 20 small speakers that emit the sound in the form of separate channels with different output intensity, in a 360-degree radius and at different firing angles. Consequently, it creates various real and virtual sound sources in the room. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Luminous can be produced in different sizes with various light and sound output power for different groups of users. TAGS: Ergonomic design, Indirect lighting, Wireless sound system, 3D sound, Design for emotions RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main design philosophy of Luminous is to create atmosphere and emotion that the users desire to feel, including peace, excitation, or companionship with friends and colleagues in working or living spaces. On this basis and at the first step, various concepts were generated and it was concluded that the combination of light and sound in a single product can be a practical solution. Our aim was to create a spatial sound system and natural and efficient lighting solution. Accordingly, and during the 2nd phase, sound and light generation and perception in nature were investigated. Ergonomic guidelines for lighting design also studied. Then, applicable technologies, the design trend of the current samples and product environment were analyzed. In this point (phase 3), the limitations and potentials for further development became clear and design criteria identified. During the next phase, various ideas were generated, evaluated and repeatedly modified. Finally, a detailed model of the selected idea was produced and presented. CHALLENGE: The most challenging issue during the design process was to make a balance between the product's form and functions. In fact, the core functions of the product had a dominant effect on its form. Moreover, the product should not look unusual, weird and bulky, but appealing, functional and compatible with different environments. Accordingly, more than 20 samples were generated and evaluated in order to find the optimum solution. NAME: M. Namayandegi PROFILE: M. Namayandegi has a Master of Industrial Design from Tehran University of art. He has worked as a freelance industrial designer (since 2005) and experienced developing various types of products including educational toys, solutions for disabled people, electronic devices and portable structures. As a design researcher, he also has published different papers about Creative design tools and Human factors and ergonomics. |
