DESIGN NAME: Family Lounge
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Family Lounge
INSPIRATION: The inspiration was to create a home away from home for families caught up in the demanding life of an Everton FC Academy recruit. A space for families to feel a sense of belonging, rather than just a guest stopping by. This was fulfilled with information areas, quotes lining the walls that related to the family experience, and with a mix of spaces and nooks where parents and siblings can socialise in a natural way. It needed to be multi-functional for socialising, working, eating and playing.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A balance was created between the need for a modern future proof design and the rich history of the club. Everton brand and colours are subtly displayed around the lounge including LED lighting surrounds, bespoke furnishings and USB power outlets. Contrasted with carefully selected colours and the use of sustainable wood features, which provide much needed warm tones, are easy to maintain and long lasting. The designer wanted to create a space that would last, from one generation to the next.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The lounge was designed as a comfortable homely area that reflects Everton's reputation of The People's Club. The space has ambient lighting which allows visitors to change the mood of the room through dimmable controls. The lounge provides the opportunity for different generations to interact within one space, families with young children gravitate towards the low stools and the banquette seating, whilst groups of adults come together and congregate around the tables and chairs to chat.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Finch Farm, 1 Finch Ln, Halewood, Liverpool L26 3UE. The project started in June 2018 in Liverpool suburbs and finished in September 2018

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As the designer has a long standing relationship with the club and knowledge of their stakeholders, they were able to proactively collaborate with the client to develop a clearer brief. This resulted in designs that carefully considered the families of the players and their needs. Like the addition of USB hubs so parents can work and stay connected whilst waiting for their sons. The design was developed through the initial concept stages where sketches and CGIs were produced. Various materials were used such as wood, perforated metal, nanotech matt material, steel, acrylic, lacquered timber, vinyl wallpaper.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The space was originally a block of 5 cellular offices which were fitted out 15 years ago. The refurbishment required these 5 rooms to be demolished and turned into one space which roughly measured 75 sq ft. There was a very tight deadline of just 17 weeks between receiving the brief and the handover date in September 2018.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The designer undertook stakeholder engagement research to understand needs and aspirations, therefore responding effectively to the brief. The methodology involved qualitative data, informal stakeholder discussions, precedent presentations, mood boards and written feedback, that was fed back into the iterative design. The participants included Finch Farm staff and the players' families. The designer created a modern design that retained a homely, family atmosphere.
CHALLENGE: Lighting was an important factor for the lounge design. It needed to allow the introduction of subtle Everton colours without it becoming an overpowering bold statement. Bespoke joinery was required to create seating areas that were comfortable for all ages to sit for short or long periods of time. The addition of USB power outlets allowed families to stay connected, charge devices and even work whilst waiting for long periods of time. It solved the problem of needing to step out of the space.
