Dahlia Ring by Mamiko Kuraoka

DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Dahlia

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Ring

INSPIRATION:
An elegant and lavish engagement ring inspired from Dahlia flower, with smoothly curved top for daily wear. Most engagement rings have a protruding center diamond, leading to bumps, scratches and hooks. An engagement ring is a reminder of the memorable day that lead to life in marriage, and should be comfortably worn everyday without the negative consequences. The strong and elegant appearance of Dahlia reminds the wearer the beauties of life in marriage, less the bumps and edges.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The floral design incorporates smooth top curvature that fits the wearer smoothly. Surrounding diamonds of several differing sizes, each different by 0.1 millimeters, were placed with extreme precision, making sure that the diamonds are held at contact points with sufficient strength, and that the hooks do not break. Getting the perfect angle for the surrounding diamonds to achieve the ideal smoothness and comfort was also a challenge, as well as polishing of the intricate sections.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Wear the ring. Smile.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
I am currently running my own brand PETHICA in Tokyo, Japan. This bridal ring was designed and crafted in July of 2017, over a two-months period.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Designed with CAD software Rhinoceros 5.0, then 3D printed to model wax. Wax was cast to platinum, then polished and gems setting were finished by hand. Platinum 950, Certified center Diamond 0.4ct, surrounding melee diamonds total 0.813ct.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Ring Size: 48 EU, Width: 15.5mm, Weight: 10g

TAGS:
jewelry, engagement, bridal, diamonds, handmade, rings, flower, bridal jewellery, wedding

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Much of my work is inspired from travelling to over 50 countries, through admiration of different cultures, architectures and designs. I have also traveled to Sri Lanka in search for gem mines, to know and understand where the gems sold in the market originate from.

CHALLENGE:
In all my works I try to create something unique, different, inspiring and comfortable to wear. I challenge myself all the time to make absolutely sure that my work makes people happy.
