Delixious and Charm Grill

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Electric Ceramic Grill

INSPIRATION:
This project was commissioned by elix company and includes all aspects from brand development to product design. This product is a meat grill made from heat-resistant materials to be used for grilling meat together. (In Korea or Asian countries, people gather to grill pork belly or beef together.) We set the design concept based on behavior of people grilling meat and the problems they have, while incorporating Korean and Asian food culture.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The product design concept prevents the meat from burning momentarily and over-cooking with the grill's 2-level height design. When initially cooking the meat, the lower 1st level (lower level: closer to heat source) is used, and cooked meat is moved to the 2nd level (higher level: further from heat source) to keep warm and prevent the meat from getting cold. The round indentations on the 2nd level can be used to cook foods like onions, eggs, etc. without getting them mixed with the meat.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
- This is a ceramic meat grill used to cook pork belly, beef, etc. - The grill is composed of 2 levels; the lower level is used to grill the meat, and the upper level is used to contain cooked meat. - This can be used on gas stoves, electric stoves (induction), etc. - The borders (edges) of the product has weak heat delivery, so there is no worry for burning your hands. - A container such as a paper cup is placed below the hole to collect excess grease.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in Gwangju, South Korea on April, 2017 and completed its design and manufacture in December, 2017. Brand development and product design project were progressed simultaneously, and the final report was written in January, 2018. - This project was a part of the Industrial Technology Innovation Program supervised by the South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy under the name of (Development of 500 Celsius grade ceramic grill fused with temperature control (100 - 300 Celsius) roaster to replace charcoal and direct roaster).

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This product is manufactured with special heat-resistant materials that can withstand 700 Degrees(Celsius) of heat. It is the first product in the world capable of converting microwave into biophotons (PDP) to increase the flavor of the meat. 1-Material : Highly heat-resistant ceramics (capable of withstanding 700 Degrees Celsius of heat) 2-Manufacturer technology : double-baked ceramics produced using state-of-the-art calculation tunnel kiln at 1,350 Degrees Celsius 3-Product characteristic : Cooks by converting microwaves into light (biophotons (PDP))

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
1) Research Background - Development of 500 Celsius grade ceramic grill fused with temperature control(100 - 300 Celsius) roaster to replace charcoal and direct roaster - Brand strategy and design development following (Development of 500 Celsius grade ceramic grill fused with temperature control(100 - 300 Celsius) roaster to replace charcoal and direct roaster) 2) Design Methods - Observation and comprehension of user behavior: understanding of user behavior and problems in each step when grilling meat from start to finish - Food culture research and analysis: Research and analysis of meat grilling methods in Korea and Asian countries, idea sketch progress based on improvements deducted from research/analysis - Understanding of material (heat-resistant ceramic) and characteristics: Understanding of manufacturing problems related to product material characteristics and reflection on design.

CHALLENGE:
Unlike standard plastic materials, ceramic materials have many unexpected problems during the manufacturing process. For example, the product may shrink in size or transform after calculation. The product thickness must be decided based on the materials (clay). Also, it is difficult to capture specific details in ceramic products, unlike standard metal products. Progressing the design with regard to these various problems in manufacturing was the biggest mission.
