DESIGN NAME: Platonic Lounge Chair
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lounge Chair
INSPIRATION: The cube, one of the five Platonic solids, was the inspiration and starting point in designing the Platonic Lounge Chair. The idea was to take this familiar shape and transform it into something sculptural yet comfortable. Playing with contrasts in materials and shapes was important to create balance structurally and aesthetically. The goal was to conceive an elegant modern chair that would embrace and celebrate the complexity of design and visual contrasts.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Platonic Lounge Chair is designed to be visually engaging and physically comfortable. It is made of contrasting elements and materials each given equal attention and importance in the design. Geometric walnut cubes are arranged and joined by stainless steel tubes to resemble a larger cube. Seen from the profile the cubes frame the thin curve of the seat. The solid surface material Avonite, used to shape the seat, is smooth, tactile and comfortable as it conforms to the human body.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Platonic is a lounge chair looking for modern interiors that support and compliment its looks. Its seat is comfortable, following the curvature of the body, allowing one to lean back and sink in, while the upper row of cubes act as arm rests at just the right height. The Platonic is a chair of substantial but manageable weight, handcrafted with the highest quality solid materials, and customizable to suit varying tastes and looks without losing its core design.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The original idea and design was first sketched in 2009. The 3D drawings were finalized in 2016 in New York. Prototyping began in May of 2016 with a team of young makers in Brooklyn, NY and lasted through early 2018. The Platonic was first showcased as part of the May 2018 Brooklyn Designs Exhibition.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Three distinct materials are the key to the Platonic’s aesthetics. 1) Solid American walnut for the cubes with special attention given to the grain structure of the wood for the best visual effect. 2) Stainless steel tubes, hand polished to a mirror-like finish, engineered to firmly connect all pieces together. 3) 6mm thin Avonite pushed to extremes by thermo-forming an ergonomic curve as the seat. It has taken over two years of prototyping, re-engineering and testing to perfect the Platonic.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research included options and methods for connecting the cubes with the steel tubes to result in a sound structure. The inner architecture linking these elements needed to prevent twisting of the cubes while maintaining the overall shape. There was also no precedent for the seat being made from Avonite, which necessitated research on the material’s strength and flexibility, and how its 6mm thinness would support the weight of a human body.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge was how all the different materials would need to fit together with a secure and structurally sound mechanism. One of the goals was also to utilize the solid surface material Avonite as the seat in a way that had not been done before. The extensive curving and thinness of the seat and the relative lack of flexibility of the material needed to be addressed in the overall design and look of the piece. The result added to the aesthetics and ensured reliable structural integrity.
