DESIGN NAME: Magellano
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lamp
INSPIRATION: The product comes from the idea of a portable torch made up of only two cylinders, and then evolved into its most expressive form, that of a 'ceiling' telescope.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Usually the pendants on the market don't contain moving parts and to adjust the distance from a plane or ground is used only the length of the connecting cable: here, instead, the vertical movement, as well as changing the appearance, allows to narrow or enlarge the light beam and then pass from a diffused light to a more punctual one. The user is then offered the opportunity to interact more with the product and to determine the desired type of light by lengthening a telescope, then choosing any extension length.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The upper rod, diameter 1 cm, allows you to have the rigidity sufficient to support the bending of the vertical sliding without having to use two hands to grasp two parts at the same time. Given the type of product, the initial configuration is set at the time of installation depending on the user's needs or location within the home, with the freedom to change it at any time without problems and leave it in any position. The user is then offered the opportunity to interact more with the product and to determine the desired type of light by lengthening a telescope, which consists in true innovation of use.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: the initial phases of the project began in the early days of May 2018, while the final phases of the project began around the 4th of June.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Magellano is characterized by an extremely simple structure: three hollow iron-aluminum cylinders with different diameters - 45, 54 and 62.6 mm and 2.5 mm thick - overlapped each other. The locking towards the two ends is ensured by three disks inserted through pressing and blocked by interference at the lower edge of each section, while cadmium magnets and an interposed plastic membrane inserted in the internal cavity ensures a friction not excessive for sliding but sufficient to stop it in any position.
Main materials: iron/aluminum profiles, magnets, plastic plates, glass optics
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The telescopic movement provides the possibility of having three different main configurations: maximum extension - length of 80 cm and distance from the table of 85 cm - medium extension - length of 66 cm and distance of 100 cm - and minimum extension - length of 47 cm and distance of 120 cm.
The diameter varies from 4 cm of the upper cylinder to 6 of the lower one.
The performance characteristics are: 5 w (500 lumen approx.)
220-240 v CRI 80 3500 K

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project has slowly come out of paper, from the sketches of exploration of shapes, dimensions, internal mechanisms. To get to its formal simplicity, Magellano has imposed a succession of choices to highlight its clarity at least. A 3D printed mock-up was subsequently produced to verify the dimensional ratios, the sliding tolerances and the main finishes.
CHALLENGE: The structure of Magellano is extremely simple, so the main problems to be solved at the beginning were essentially how to allow the cylinders to slide effortlessly and to keep them in place and to block the up and down movement of the parts. The construction of the prototype allowed to verify the sliding tolerances with the use of felt on the surfaces of 3D printed and painted pla.
