| DESIGN NAME: Oriental Treasures PRIMARY FUNCTION: Furniture Collection INSPIRATION: Oriental Treasures is a series of elegant luxury furniture pieces, fusing oriental design and functions with fine Italian craftsmanship. Designed by Chen Xuan, a leading Chinese interior designer and architect, the collection spans four objects: Royal Medicinal Cabinet, Emperor's Clothes Rack, Auspicious Dresser, Mountain Altar. No matter as standalone object, or in combination, Oriental Treasures will add a touch of Eastern wisdom and beauty to their surroundings. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Royal Medicinal Cabinet re-imagines the classic apothecary cabinet, its drawers are framed by a 24k gold finish top-board and rounded stand. Emperor’s Clothes Rack is a beautiful furnishing object, provides convenience in function and an elegant storage solution. Auspicious Dresser is intended to function as a storage piece in a large wardrobe or be placed in the bedroom. The modern Mountain Altar is a semi-clear bent glass console, featuring intricate ancient wood inlays. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Royal Medicinal Cabinet re-imagines the classic apothecary cabinet as a confident and superbly designed furnishing piece Emperor's Clothes Rack again can be used to hang coats and also other clothes at the end of a busy day, or to display a collection of ties and belts for example. Auspicious Dresser is a re-imagination of a large and low cabinet Mountain Altar works well as a sideboard and can stand alone as a room's centre piece, against a wall, or blend in with the home decor. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: These product started in 2017 and finished in 2018. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each object is a modern re-interpretation of classical Chinese furniture pieces. Royal Medicinal Cabinet: The drawer details include a two colour finish, separating the outside and inside, as well as solid 24k gold finish knobs that add value to the elegant appearance. Emperor's Clothes Rack: The two 24k gold finish hanging rods are of different height, and provide ample space also for clothes hangers, and the bottom drawers serve to store daily wear or accessories. CHALLENGE: Similarities between architectural design and furniture design lies more likely in structural mechanics, thus in the creation of Oriental Treasures we communicated repeatedly about structural mechanics with the manufacturers, which in the end helped us make big breakthrough in the aspect of structural mechanics. Thanks for the supporting of the manufacturers, we have solved many problems of mechanics conduction. In fact, when designing the furniture piece, I did not adopt techniques used in architectural design, but take into consideration the architectural culture, society background and historical background. NAME: Shishang Architecture PROFILE: Chen Xuan is an award-winning designer, architect and entrepreneur based in Beijing, China. She works between architecture, interior and space design, furniture, fashion and lifestyle product design. She has been named a top Chinese designer by AD magazine, Better Home & Garden magazine and the Hurun Luxury Report. In 1999 Chen Xuan founded Shishang Architecture, an architecture and interior design firm based in Beijing's Caoshangdi Art District. Shi Shang focuses on high-end residential design projects including villa and condominium architecture and interior design, as well as innovative retail and hospitality designs. Her clients include Chinese A-List celebrities, influential business people and venture capitalists, as well as luxury brands and cultural institutions. Chen Xuan's instinct series of tables and furniture has been exhibited in the Beijing World Art Museum, is part of the ongoing collection of the Chengdu Biennale and has been purchased by influential people inside China and abroad, including French fashion designer Christian Louboutin. As a leader in the Chinese design industry, Chen Xuan is regularly invited to judge creative competitions and lecture on design and creativity. She is an ongoing judge in the CCTV2 TV Show Kongjian Bangyang. She is a designer-host on Mengxiang Gaizaojia, Zhejiang TVs successful design TV show. And she gives regular interviews and lectures on domestic and international design events. Chen Xuan graduated from the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts with a PhD in Architecture. She has traveled extensively through Asia, Europe and America and enjoys spending time with her family. |
