DESIGN NAME: Diversity and Cohesion
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: The residence client, being the principal owner of a trading company, has always remembered the relaxing atmosphere of the Southeast Asian island nations from his days of business travels, and hence particularly aspired to choose warm timber materials as the primary materials of the residence. The owner couple who has been busy with their business for years wished to optimize their interaction with their son, which led to our design decision to optimize the area of the public spaces imbued with the multi-function design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The interior space shall empower the connective relationships amongst the family members, as a good design will enrich the relationship between, and living quality of, the residents which are far more important than the emphasis on interior hardware and building materials. So, in terms of layout planning, individuality of each area is maintained to constructing a communicative spatial relationship, so that the residence is not just a place of dwelling, but also a warm place to live in.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As the original layout was of 3-room layout, the simple population in the client's family led to the removal of one of the room walls to create a semi-open study, while dining and kitchen areas become connected with the living room in forming a flowing, transparent and bond-building living domain.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was completed in December 2017 in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Whether it is upon entry, or the living room area, and the dining area, the styling of such synergetic materiality indeed mirrored enriched layers of aesthetics and functional requirements, as well as bringing in natural lighting so as to achieve flexible usage blocks that are inter-dependent yet connected. The open kitchen served complete the spatial incongruence with functionality and styling considerations well addressed. As the private spaces enjoy the material continuity from the public spaces, it maintains the visual spaciousness for suitable sleeping ambiance.
CHALLENGE: Due to the presence of the existing structure of the building, the interior space has many protruded and recessed patches; the design team strived to clean up the line formwork through design and giving a clean-looking visual effect to the inhabitants while extracting the functional values that suit the needs of the clients.
