DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
System

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Table

INSPIRATION:
Is design often conscious with intent? How can design be deconstructed to derive a level of novelty besides its dominant principles? Inspired by American artist Sol LeWitt's Wall Drawings, the result is a set of steel interpretation accentuated by its light and shadow. This experiential project exemplify an exploration of systematic practice, visual interactions and human experiences.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
SYSTEM is a set of three-dimensional objects made from tubular solid stainless steel. The rods are joined together by craft welders and finished in powder coating treatment, suitable for indoors and outdoors. Functionally, the objects are designed in different heights to overlap or simply serving its purpose individually.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The three objects are designed in different heights to juxtapose in an overlapping manner or simply serving its function as a table individually. When not in use, they can be perceived as n objet d’art at home.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The ideation for SYSTEM was conceived in March 2016 in Singapore for an annual design event SingaPlural. Since then they had been exhibited in several local events in ArtStage Singapore 2017 and Design District Dialogue 2018; and currently consigned with The Artling.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Office Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Made of tubular solid stainless steel, the rods are joined together by craft welders using tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding methods; and finished in powder coating treatment, suitable for indoors and outdoors.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Square : 340 X 500 X 500 mm Circle: 400 X 500 X 500 mm Triangle: 370 X 500 X 500 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The designers' approach is often about reducing and reinterpreting design theories with the aim to develop different typologies and expressions in design language. For the project on System, they were drawn to the ideology of Conceptual Art, particularly to works by Sol Lewitt which narrates about instructional and systematic practice in creating art form. Which got them further into a dialogue on the idea of design being conscious in intent, and also how can design be deconstructed to derive a level of novelty besides its dominant principles. "The idea becomes a machine that make the art." - Sol Lewitt

CHALLENGE:
The hardest part of the design activity is in the production of the tables. The simplicity and clarity of the design requires good precision in the welding, almost seeking perfect in machinated beauty but in the form of craft. Hence it is very hard to find welders who are willing to challenge. Also in terms of measurements, a slight deviation will make a drastic visual effect hence accuracy and consistence is important in the making. In the design, I strictly employ lines in horizontal and vertical formats; and when shapes and forms are utilized, it will have to be the most basic unadorned geometric forms. Each tables are designed to synchronize with one another proportionately at heights of 340, 370 and 400mm. Technically, the external circular-profiled rods which formed the outline are selected at 10mm diameter, with the internal rods forming the body at 5mm diameter each. Each distanced at 5mm apart.
