DESIGN NAME: Balangay
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dining Table
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the first wooden watercraft excavated in Southeast Asia and is evidence of early Filipino craftsmanship. The mix of lines and curves, use of symmetry and light textures further enhances the curves of the table giving it a more crisp, sharper and very spare look and feel. True to its name, origin and history, the design and materials used serves as the functional bearer to families and will become central to the Filipino home.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design is a mixture of reclaimed wood and glass to exude a modern and clean look. Reclaimed wood which is popular locally has a unique appearance, durability and history. Sustainability would be its most distinct quality. Construction uses traditional tools and methods used by local master boat building tribes. Made by hand, energy consumption is minimized and waste in construction is 100% recoverable. Electricity will be at minimum and use of reclaimed wood gives it a low carbon footprint.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Table is a no frill table. However, one useful aspect about the table is the storage or display area right below the glass. It would create different moods depending upon the object on the display area
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The concept was born in 2015 but the prototyping started around january 2018 to september 2018 in Pampanga, Philippines
