DESIGN NAME: Deskware
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Item-integrated Desk
INSPIRATION: Pencil stand, bizcard holder, and various sorting boxes. There are a lot of desk items for sorting on the desk, but they seem to become more complicated. Is there any better way? Starting with the question, I have been thinking about customized desk furniture with integrated design of desk items and desks. However, there are many kinds of products that are desired by individual or by job characteristics. But is not it possible with 3D printing? I realized the feasibility and produced this work.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Deskware is a desk that can combine various 3d printed items into a desk as an integrated design.
If the pole at the bottom of the items is inserted into the hole on the desk, those with a high height such as a bookshelf can receive a stable support. And you can pull out the electronic wire anywhere.
The standardized unit base makes it easier to select and design items, change their positions, and share 3D model of your items with other people.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Combine the items in the unit base on the desk where you want. If the item has a pole, plug it into the hole. If the item has an electric wire, put the electric wire in the electric line hole. You can customize your own desk by changing the location of the items.
It can make your own desks with the design and functions you want by putting items as if you are dressing on your desk.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This work was produced in Korea from April to August 2018 and won the Korea Furniture Design Competition and exhibited at the Korea International Furniture Exhibition from late August to early September.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I needed a universal design that could combine more diverse items and make it easy for anyone to create items. So I made a prototype using Styrofoam and refined the design by applying several items sold on the market and combinable items. As a result, I unitized the items to a size of 140mm x 140mm x 20mm and designed safety hole and electric wire hole for each unit, ensuring scalability and stability as well as universal design.
CHALLENGE: There were two challenges in creating Deskware. The first one was to find the layout of the appropriate desk top. I had to do a lot of thinking and modeling until I found a layout with enough work space to use even when my hands were easily extended to items. The second was that the 3D printing was so slow that it took a lot of time to build and test the mock up. It was an experience that felt the necessity of unit standard rather.
