DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Norlan Whisky Glass

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Drinking Glass

INSPIRATION:
The starting point for the design came while our designer was enjoying whisky in a traditional nosing glass while staring at the movement of waves in the ocean. The idea for how to create a more modern, high performance nosing glass for whisky took root. Discussions with scientists led to a primary focus on how to better aerate the spirit. At the same time, a double-walled structure was deemed necessary to create a more aesthetically pleasing shape around the functional interior.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Inspired by nature, digitally crafted, and meticulously refined with a master whisky distiller, the glass has been designed to capture whisky's complex flavors and aromatics and deliver them to the senses like never before. With the aid of specially developed protrusion forms inside the glass, whisky swirled within the bowl forms a standing wave shape, increasing the surface to air ratio and rate of oxidization, thereby reducing the presence of ethanol for more expressive aromas.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A hybrid design, the glass is the perfect synthesis of a modern tumbler form with an exceptionally improved nosing glass. The double-walled structure allows the user to appreciate an aesthetically captivating exterior while benefiting from the aroma delivery offered by the interior. We also considered the social ergonomics of drinking from tightly focused nosing glasses and optimized the vessel to allow the user to inhale and drink the spirit without tilting her head back too deeply.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The Initial design and research on whisky science and ritual began in Reykjavik, Iceland in March, 2014. The glass was further developed in Scotland with master distillers and the design finalized in December, 2014. The first samples arrived in May, 2015 in preparation for Kickstarter launch in November, 2015. The campaign ended in mid-December, 2015, exceeding the funding goal by over 1000% with more that $800,000 USD raised. Production began immediately and first deliveries began in July, 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
A double-walled vessel was deemed the best way to combine a high performing internal vessel with a modern exterior that exhibited our designers' language combining geometric and organic forms.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Dimensions: 95 mm tall, 82 mm diameter, 63 mm diameter at rim Total capacity approx. 200 ml. Recommended pour 20 to 40 ml. Weight: 125 grams

TAGS:
glassware, drinkware, whisky, whiskey, biomimicry

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research began with biomimicry, trying to re-create the marangoni effect in a small vessel. We looked at fluid dynamics modeling to control the flow and ran tests with a spectrometer to sample the compounds in the headspace of existing glasses. A combination of design development, intuition, and market analysis was then used to create an aperture V lip matrix. 90 different variations were 3D printed and then tested by a master whisky distiller to help select the ideal inner volume.

CHALLENGE:
Probably one of the hardest challenges was sticking to the project amidst all of the skepticism. Convincing industry experts who had been in the business for decades that a new glass could change something they knew so well, Whisky is a very traditional industry that doesn’t always identify with innovation or welcome change.
