| DESIGN NAME: Fusing and Freezing PRIMARY FUNCTION: Necklace, Ring, Hand Ornament INSPIRATION: The porcelain embedding is a state-level non-material cultural heritage in Chaoshan area, Guangdong Province, China. Ceramic chips are glued together with cement to produce a vivid and brilliant image of auspicious animals and plants so as to decorate buildings. I hope to extend this traditional art to modern design. The metal sublimates after fusing in the fire while the cement, like ice, freezes the trace of time. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design series combine the abstract organic form of cement with the metal casting geometric form to signify the contrast between the uncertainty of traditional handicraft and the accuracy of modern industrial manufacturing. The cement part is accessorized with laser cutting copper, refering to the traditional porcelain craft of "floating embedding" . They present a new look of traditional craft with its modern form, material and texture. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Fusing and Freezing series show an effect of traditional temperament and modern design at the same time. So the wearer can feel the traditional culture while wearing those artistic and challenging products. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Feb, 2018 and finished in Jun, 2018 in Guangzhou, China. It was exhibited in the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in Jul, 2018 and the Fifth Intangible heritage fair in Sep, 2018 in Shandong Province, China. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: cement, copper inlaying, cast copper plated with 18K gold SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: necklace：450mm-120 TAGS: art jewelry, tradition, necklace, ring, hand ornament, handmade, cement RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Through data collection and research, and field visits of traditional art I try to understand and confirm the characteristics of material and craft. Also I use a very modern form and irregular wearing ways to make the designs to show a traditional temperament and modern art style. CHALLENGE: After understanding the characteristics of traditional craft and material, I have to make a lot of technology test to determine the way of showing the characteristics, and the collocation of different materials.
