DESIGN NAME: Lightwell House
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: In the project, we reintroduced the concept of "Sanheyaun", or three-section compound house with a central courtyard, which is the diminishing traditional typology of residential houses in the Taiwan, to rethink contemporary Taiwanese residential housing. We have re-created the living room space as a reinterpretation of the traditional Sanheyuan's courtyard space. A lightwell is inserted from the roof to the living room as the open sky.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The lightwell appears with a magnificent glow, vertically connecting all floors in the project. Under the lightwell, main living space for the whole family is weaved on first floor. All spaces on the second and the third floors can be linked with the lightwell, the connection between this family is no longer constrained by any physical structure.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project was fully discussed with the client to fulfill the needs of the family. The vertical circulation is adjusted elaborately by space continuation, as well as serving the functions of each floor. The lightwell inserted throughout floors is the key solution to combine all spaces for different purposes, both physically and spiritually, becoming the main character of the project.

CHALLENGE: The challenge of this project came from the site itself: the width of the site is no more than 7 meters. Besides the front street on the east side, all three directions is surrounded with houses next to it. Furthermore, a condominium is right next to the western boundary of the site, causing no direct sunlight in the afternoon. How to weave the spaces in this compact area and gather as much light as possible, is the core topic and challenge of this project.
