DESIGN NAME: Signature Tote
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Handbag
INSPIRATION: We became aware of a distinct lack of elegant African inspired handbags made out of quality materials. We wanted to create a classic piece that combines bold African aesthetics with the refined grace of a sophisticated lady. Inspired by the traditional brass jewellery of Southern Africa, our signature tote combines the excitement and beauty of Africa with the clean sophistication of the modern woman.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Signature Tote is handcrafted by specialist exotic skin leather craftsmen in Cape Town, South Africa. It features decorative gold ringed handle hardware which is complemented by the symmetrical scales of the deep brown, soft gloss finished Nile crocodile leather. A single white crocodile leather stripe runs down the front of the bag which contrasts the deep hues and echoes the structured form of the bag.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Signature Tote is designed for the modern woman. It is held shut by means of a push clasp mechanism. To open the bag, slide your thumb and index finger between the sides of the bag and squeeze the two sides of the clasp. The bag is a practical size to comfortably take into any event, yet it can fit up to an A4 portfolio. A zip pocket is fitted within the lining for valuables. The length of the handles ensures that the bag can be held in hand, without being too close to the floor.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Calie Parese began the research and development of the Signature Collection in the United Kingdom, January 2016. The collection launch took place in London, February 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Signature Tote is made from locally sourced Nile crocodile. Crocodile skin was chosen for the bags outer as it is durable yet elegant, with its soft gloss finish and its symmetrical scales. The inner of the bag is made of suede Nappa which was selected for its luxurious feel and to provide a stark contrast to the outer texture. The bag is handcrafted in Cape Town by leather craftsmen who have inherited their family trade from three generations past.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: H: 290mm (excluding handles) x W: 410 mm x D: 82 mm approx.
The bag is presented in a pure cotton flannel drawstring dust bag and branded box covered in buckram cloth and completed with a leather handle. The use of the dust bag for storage and transport after purchase will prolong the life of the bag by minimising the chances of fading or scratching.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Numerous research methods were employed with the objective of producing an African inspired luxury handbag of international quality, handcrafted in South Africa.
We met with industry professionals to gain insight into crocodile farming practices and manufacturing techniques. We used WGSN for trend forecasting, Autodesk Maya for design visualization, competitive analysis for market placement and pricing as well as showcasing our sample collection in luxury safari lodges for direct customer feedback.
CHALLENGE: One of the biggest challenges was having the handle hardware cast. We worked with six different manufacturers until we found a company that was able to 3D print our CAD model of the piece and produce a cast to the correct shape and quality we required. Another challenge came in sourcing high quality crocodile skins that adhere to the strong sustainable and ethical values of the brand. This challenge was addressed by sourcing from suppliers that are a part of Exotic Leather South Africa.
