DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Synovial Collection

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Jewelry Collection

INSPIRATION:
The project focuses on jewels seen as the response to a need of more genuine interactions caused by the extreme digitalization of human actions. Studying movements and manipulability brought to the main inspiration, the Synovial joints. They are the most common joints in the human body, which rapresentation in simple models is used to explain what movement a specific joint permits to the bones. The intuitivity of the movements that these shapes communicate turned out to be the key of project.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Synovial Collection consist of three necklaces and bracelets and aspire to introduce new levels of interaction between user and product. The designed magnetic closure allows to play with the components creating different configurations and making the jewels close to the user. The collection rides the rise of affordable jewelry through the use of simple materials in favor of a tactile and visual experience guided by contrasts and textures that encourage an ironic interpretation of the jewels.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Thanks to the magnetic properties of the closure components, the necklaces and the bracelets of the collection are characterized by the possibility of playing and fidgeting with the jewels in order to generate simple movements (scrolling, orbital and pivot rotation) and to obtain different configurations personalizing the jewels. All the beads can be separated from the wire and can be substituted choosing a variant different in texture and color.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in October 2017 and ended in January 2018. The entire development process was carried forward during the Final Synthesis course at Politecnico di Milano, Milan, Italy.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Each item of the collection has half of the components realized in Cellulose Acetate, a biopolymer that allows great texture variability, and produced through milling process (the closure components in Acetate also contain a Neodimium magnet). The other half is made of ferromagnetic Iron alloy produced through centrifugal casting process followed by electroplating treatment. This processes fit with industrial mass production and guarantee low equipment costs and advantageous cycle times.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Necklaces: 180mm x 180mm x 25mm WxDxH Bracelets: 80mm x 80mm x 15 mm WxDxH

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
A depth data research has been carried out to analyze trends of the jewelry market. The established goal was to find possible innovation areas left unexplored, looking to design products for the future. The research has been conducted through the reading of official reports and of themed papers. The resulting trends and aspects that drove the project development are the growth of the affordable luxury sector and the need in a gamification process to offer a pleasant experience for consumers.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge faced in this project was to reconsider the classical idea of jewels proposing a possibility of innovation in the way of use of jewels. At the same time it was challenging and stimulating how to improve the connection between users and their jewels introducing the idea of playability and fidgeting in the world of jewelry.
