DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Living in Fun

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Installation Space

INSPIRATION:
The concept was Inspired by using houseware objects to build a series of kinetic setting like the famous board game Mouse Trap to draw the attention of visitor. Based on this, a series of mini installations with moving elements were created under the concept name Living in Fun. The designs were then intentionally mixed with some of the material finishes from the 4 trend forecasts conversions to create more continuity between the various locations of designs.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The organiser of the HK Houseware Fair offered 3 areas inside the HK Convention and Exhibition Centre to uplift its image. These include a welcome signage located at the entrance foyer of the venue, the main entry point of exhibition hall and a central display area inside the hall. In addition, 4 future trend forecast reports had to be converted into actual physical spaces. Under the concept Living in Fun mini kinetic installations were created for the various spaces to uplift the fairs image.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
One main challenge was the flow, since each area was sporadically spread out it was difficult to create visual continuity throughout. As such a visually strong welcome signage installation was important to heighten the visitors first impression. This theme would be echoed at main entry of the hall and inside central display of the hall. These 3 installations together with the 4 trend forecast spaces accomplished to elevated the overall experience to make this more engaging for the visitors.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project duration was 3 months from initial briefing to onsite completion. It was located at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai Hong Kong and the event ran for 3 days starting from the 20th to the 23rd of April 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The 30m2 x 5m high welcome signage consisted of 2 LED monoliths as a backdrop. Situated in front a kinetic setting was created using an automated seesaw, a curved ramp and turntables with oversized household objects made of wood. The same material and finishes were applied inside the 16m2 entry point space of the hall and the 150m2 central display inside the hall. Black metal framing, reusable aluminum system, foamboard, digital print, vinyl graphics and biodegradable carpet were also applied.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The 30m2 x 5m high welcome signage consisted of 2 LED monoliths with a 3mm pitch. The installation pieces in front were made of wood with simple mechanics to create a kinetic effect. A 40mmx40mm black metal frame, reusable aluminum system, stretched vinyl graphics, wood and biodegradable carpet were materials specified to construct the 16m2 main entry of the hall and 150m2 central display area. Houseware props suspended above the central display were installed to perform mechanical movements.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research began with analysing the trend forecasts predictions which were very generalised for many various industries. To create more relevance to the houseware industry further refinement was made on the research result. Without any preconception of the outcome, the design team mixed parts of the material finish from the 4 trend forecasts into our 3 installations. The result was a series of fun holistic expression of kinetic movements under the Living in Fun concept.

CHALLENGE:
Apart from the tight onsite production time of 3 days, the most challenging part was finding a design concept that would stimulate the imagination of visitors as they journeyed through this trade fair space. Since the areas given were sporadically spread out, it required some visual cues to tie everything together made this a challenge. The solution was to take elements from the 4 trend displays and integrate this into our kinetic installations for the 3 areas given by the organiser.
