DESIGN NAME:

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Sofa
INSPIRATION:
The source of inspiration for the shape was the outlines of sea shells combined with exoskeleton technology. We desired to create a sofa with the effect of optical illusion. It should be the light and airy furniture that could be used both at home and outdoors.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
To achieve the effect of lightness, we used a web of nylon ropes. The shape of the sofa is set by a lightweight metal structure. The hardness of the carcass is balanced by the weaving and softness of the silhouette lines. The angle of the internal arcs is set taking into account the comfort of the seat. Soft overhead seats and cushions finish the composition of the sofa. A rigid base under the corner sections of the seat can be used as side tables.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
To increase the seat area, insert the corner cushions in the side sections of the sofa. Without corner cushions, the side sections represent two small tables on each side of the seat.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The design of the Shell sofa was developed in May 2018. The start of production is planned for early 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The base is made of lightweight metal rods that are attached to the guides. Arcs are tightened with nylon ropes, which creates depth and volume. For upholstery of seats natural fabrics are used.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The process of developing the Shell sofa was influenced by fashion trends in imitating exoskeleton technology and 3d printing.
CHALLENGE:
It was necessary to harmoniously combine a lot of elements of different shapes and textures. Despite a huge metal frame, the sofa should look airy.
