DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Phaino

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Artistic Jewelry

INSPIRATION:
The project is inspired by conceptual minimalism, not from the point of making space for more, but as a quest to find the absolute essence of a moment, feeling or idea. When removing the noise, just a few lines are more than enough to describe a thought or an idea. The human mind is fully capable of connecting minimalistic sketches to concepts and feelings. I found this fascinating and I wanted to give my artworks a more physical touchable form. I moved to 3D printed jewelry as a form of wearable art.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project is a 3D printed jewelry collection entitled Phaino (Greek transliteration): to show, bring to light, reveal and become evident. The aim is to create semiotic pieces that have meaning when people wear them and operate as a connective link between ideas/art and tangible objects. Each piece is based on a conceptual minimalistic artwork; when removing the noise, just a few lines are more than enough to transform a thought or an idea into 3D printed wearable art.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The designs are conceptual jewelry pieces that operate as a connective bidirectional link between ideas, feelings, art and tangible objects. A human emotion or a concept is turned into a minimalistic artwork, which is transformed into a jewelry piece. And in the other direction, people interact with the jewelry, connecting their physical form to a feeling or a concept.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The jewelry project started in August 2017 and finished in February 2018. It was part of Wolf&Badger online collection. The art project on which it is based started in January 2017 and it is still ongoing. Part of it was exhibited at the Arts Festival of Jesus College Cambridge in 2018 and 2019 and is part of the Four Seasons Astir Palace art collection and displayed at its premises.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The collection includes 14k gold plated, 14k rose gold plated and rhodium plated brass pendants and earrings made using 3D printing technology. A 3D model is extracted from each of my minimalistic artworks and a 3D printer produces the jewelry in 14K gold or rhodium plated brass.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Length, from 3cm to 7cm . Width, from 3cm to 5cm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This is a study on conceptual minimalism, the quest to find the absolute essence of things, researching human perception and semiotics. Plato, in his theory of Forms, argues that reality is represented by non-physical Forms, Ideas. My minimalistic designs are Forms that represent reality and are connected to meanings, concepts. For i.e., people see a minimalistic form of a kiss and think of love. Transforming them into 3D printed jewelry, I added a link between Plato's Ideas to the physical world.

CHALLENGE:
The project consists of three main pillars: art, fashion, and technology. The way to combine them in a form that is aesthetically beautiful, retains the artistic value, the feeling or the concept of the artwork and is technologically achievable was quite challenging. There is a controversy surrounding the use of technology and whether it kills or not creativity nowadays, but for me, technology is what turns ideas into tangible possibilities, and it can drive creation. The jewelry collection managed to balance all the above.

This award-winning work is truly remarkable and stands out for its unique combination of art, fashion, and technology. The minimalistic designs that capture the essence of a thought, feeling or idea, and transforming them into 3D printed wearable art is a fascinating concept. The balance achieved between aesthetics, artistic value, and technological feasibility is also noteworthy. This work is a beautiful example of how modern technologies can be used to bring concepts and ideas to life.
