| DESIGN NAME: Silent and Movement PRIMARY FUNCTION: Documentary Photography INSPIRATION: Inspired by the big difference between calm and silent atmosphere of usual life at temple and lively, energetic and powerful atmosphere at festival. Thousands of naked men try to get holy sticks and the scene is overwhelming but the silent and calm temple surrounds the hundreds of naked men and it seems like the temple is calmly protecting them. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Senichiro Nogami was asked from the temple to take photos for the record. Usually the temple is very silent and calm but few times a year at festival, the temple becomes lively with thousands of people. The Stillness and Movement tried to express two aspects of temple in a photo. To do so, lightings are carefully used and made the clear difference between bright part and dark part. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: I took a whole day to take photos of all the ceremony. In order to show the power and energy at the festival, I try not to use flash. I only had limited area to take photos but I tried to get close as much as I could. All the participants have to get into holy pound. At this festival, there is no rule except harming other people is banned. Everyone scrambles to obtain the holy sticks but once somebody get the holy stick, everyone congratulates the winner. After the festival, the stick goes back to the temple and carefully wrapped. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: DSLR Natural light: to show the realistic sensation, natural light was the best way. Flashlight erase all the heat and enthusiasm. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: DSLR 14mm 1/100 f4 Size of photo: 5520 x 3680 The photos incresed the lightness difference with dodging TAGS: Photographer, Buddha, festival, traditional, Japan, Okayama, Hadaka, Eyo, Saidaiji, Shingi, Fukuotoko, Takaragi RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I got permission from monk of the temple called Saidaiji to take photos of this extraordinary traditional festival which takes place in western part of Japan. This traditional and sacred festival has started in 1510 and was 508th year this year. In this festival, 9000 naked men scramble to obtain two sacred wooded sticks Through this photo shooting, I realized the reasons why many of men participate in this festival. Because they have religions faith, they want pray for safe of their family and they want show their braveness and strength. CHALLENGE: There are so many people and strict priests at the festival and was very challenging to keep the good position. Also the festical goes on so quickly and need to move as fast as I can to get the moments.
