DESIGN NAME: Seaport City
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Shopping Mall
INSPIRATION: Triangular stars are used as the recurring motive throughout the mall for unity. We especially incorporated overlapping tiles up the wall near the rail in the atrium; the scattering of tiles between the patchworks allows sunlight to seep through, creating an lively atmosphere. By implying the Hair Running Cut design concept on the rectangular aluminum hanging poles at the atrium, we construct a variety of layered shapes on it for a stylish tone, which assemble the hair held by the hair stylist.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Seaport City consists of eight storeys (rooftop include) and a three-level underground garage. Triangular stars, roof tiles and hair running cut are core design elements of the shopping mall. Convenient passage of each storey is decorated with wall paintings of different theme echo respective cultural concepts. Apart from creating a trendy art space within the mall, we also take into account needs of different users in order to set up human oriented facilities area.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The shopping mall is more than merely a chic artistic architecture.It is also a functional environment ready to cater the needs of all users. For instance, we have incorporated a range of humanized facilities including toilets specially designed for the disabled and parents with child; waiting areas are reserved outside the toilets; nursery rooms that can accommodate several prams, and ultra avant-garde smoking space for smokers featuring smoke extraction functions and two-in-one ashtray with washbasin, so smokers can directly wash away the ashwhilekeeping the area clean and odorless.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project started in June 2013 in Xiaolan and finished in September 2017.The Project is located in Xiaolan China.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Since the shopping mall is a public space project and this project has eight atriums of different sizes, how to make the pedestrian flow line smoother and the design details more humanistic are the focuses of our research. We take the habits of local consumers, the data provided by the planning team and the design into overall consideration. In the actual operation of project, the design has also been highly praised by consumers.
CHALLENGE: Seaport City has teams with different cultural background. They are architects from Japan, engineers from China and interior designers from Hong Kong. The team has diversified characteristics, so how to integrate different cultures is one of the challenges of the project. In addition, as the project takes a long time from concept to whole process of implementation, fire regulations also change over time, we must adjust the design according to the changes in the regulations so that the project can be implemented.
