DESIGN NAME: MonoPunk
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Accessories and Electronics
INSPIRATION: In comparison to the original punks intended to shock and cause social reactions, a modern take on the punk ideology seeks not to shock but rather to give food for thought. It is also a bold statement of independence and alternative thinking. This comes as an unexpected, yet modern, take on how items can be designed with personality in mind in order to make them more appealing to those who want to deviate from the norm.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The MonoPunk series consist of a backpack vacuum and a mask-incorporated headphone, both of which have been outfitted with leather accents and metal spikes in order to add personality to somewhat ordinary items. Through the use of anti-fashion styling, a user can show the rebellious spirit while performing household chores.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The backpack vacuum offers a very different experience from everyday consumer electric appliances. Unlike regular vacuuming, which may be considered a chore, the punk backpack vacuum offers the user the chance to make a statement while doing housework. The mask-incorporated headphones features rivets and has a steampunk feel to it. It offers a more private space than headphones alone, and allows the wearer to display a strong personal identity while enjoying music.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2016 in Taipei and finished in May 2017 in Taipei, and was exhibited in 36th YODEX Young Designer's Exhibition (Taiwan Design Center organized).
