| DESIGN NAME: Carta PRIMARY FUNCTION: Measuring and Mapping Wheel INSPIRATION: Its Summer and you want to create the landscape of your dreams. But how are you going to do it? What material is needed for that garden? Along what path are those paver stones going and how will it look? How much fencing do you need and where do the post go? Carta does this for you and allows you to dimension, plan, and then build a project in the real world. Without the need to do any math. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: With Carta you can measure an area and draw your plan virtually with our app. Then bring your design to life in the real world with directional guidance and without any math. Measure distance, perimeter, and area with Carta while you create an annotated map on your phone using images, notes, and links over real world images or blueprints. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Carta connects with your phone via bluetooth. In our app you can import a satellite image of your project and measure the dimensions using the wheel. As you measure the path you walk will appear in the app over the satellite image showing you in real time project dimensions. In the app you can add notes, links, and images to create a control center for your project where you can find every aspect. once done design the app and Carta will guide you back to the real world points in your design. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Carta project began in the Fall of 2015 where it also one a Pro Tool Innovation Award. In 2016 we went on to win a Red Dot Product Design Award and be a Finalist in the International Design Excellence Awards. In 2017 we were a Finalist at Mobile World Congress, and in 2018 we won the Silver Homewares Award at the National Hardware Show. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: For Carta we wanted to create a friendly and welcoming design so we came up with the one spoke concept to make it appear open and have users want to approach it. This one spoke design along side its smooth curves and sleek design makes it look innovative yet simple to use. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Weight: 1.7kg Dimensions: 838mm x 914mm x 76mm TAGS: Mapping, measurement, planning, wheel, design, measurement wheel, DIY, Home Improvement RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - CHALLENGE: With Carta, we wanted to solve the problems of time-consuming busywork and inaccurate measurements on job sites that are caused by traditional measuring wheels. In the past, users would have to write down measurements separately to then be recorded in a blueprint later. By combining the technology present in users' phones and our app with a physical measuring wheel, we allow users to create blueprints in real time. This efficient usability paired with a welcoming and innovative open-spoke design makes Carta stand out from the rest of the field in both looks and function.
