DESIGN NAME: The Barisieur
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tea & Coffee Brewing Alarm Clock
INSPIRATION: Inspired by a combination of the modern ritual of filter coffee with the iconic vinyl record player, encouraging a nostalgic experience with the user. The design was born with a digital detox in mind, where the design language balances between simplicity and mystified alchemy; watch how the water magically transports from one vessel to other due to steam pressure.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Josh raised over $700,000 for a product that he designed at university after it went viral and people from all over the World were after it. Josh collected an impressive mailing list of over 30,000 emails. Josh worked part-time at a design store in Shoreditch (called SCP), serving coffee, talking design to customers in order to pay rent and the product developers he had working for him at the time.
He joined Virgin Start-up in order to get a business mentor and a small loan as Josh knew nothing about business. He created a striking video (on a micro-budget) with one of his talented friends from university; Rob Anthill. Driving around England, using friends of friends to let them shoot in their houses or coffee shops in order to get shots whilst sleeping top and tail; living off pizza and coffee.
Josh launched his Kickstarter Campaign in May 2016 with an ambitious goal of £380,000 (due to expensive tooling and materials etc.). He raised over £100,000 in 6 hours - it was an incredible start – But he still had a long way to go.
A week before the end of the campaign Josh still had £120,000 to go and it didn’t look like he was going to hit his target. It wasn’t until virgin-start up rung Josh to see if he wanted to meet Richard Branson and share his story.
After Richard Branson gave him a few tips, where they even spoke about Virgin Hotels, Josh still had to raise £100,000 in just 48 hours. The UK was then told they were leaving the EU, therefore, the conversion rate from sterling to dollar plummeted; consequently, the USA backers would get a more affordable Barisieur. Kickstarter saw that Josh was very close and decided to make the Barisieur ‘project of the day’. Josh ended up crawling over the line by £3,000. He had done it...

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: There are 4 SKU's - A 240V and 110V in both Black/Walnut Wood and White/ Rubber Wood. The plastic is injection molded, the wood is carved by a computer numerically controlled machine. The glassware is made with a combination of hand blown and molded techniques. The Stainless steel bases to the boiling vessel are machine stamped and then bonded to the glass using a specialized UV bonded glue. The showerhead for the transport tube has a small silicon spout at the end which is injection molded and there is a stainless steel perforated disc inside to control the flow of the water. There is a bearing that houses a swiveling arm, which has a flange integrated into the wood in order to swivel back and forth.
The bungs are compression molded - and the drawer lid is stamped out stainless steel.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: It encourages a nightly routine, were a repeated action before going to bed has been scientifically proven to increase a better nights sleep. It also encourages one to get off their phone or tablet before going to bed by the USB port in the back which can charge the phone. Blue light emitted from the screen is bad when one is going to sleep.
When it comes to the morning, it wakes you up by stimulating all 5 senses - This has also been scientifically proven to be the best way to wake up. 1) The smell of the coffee brewing 2) The sound of it bubbling away, 3) the sight of it happening 4) touching and picking up the glass to drink, 5) tasting the tea or coffee and becoming stimulated by the caffeine ready to seize the morning ahead.
CHALLENGE: There were a lot of challenges with this entire project. There seemed to be a hurdle every month. From finding the right team to help develop the design for manufacture, to launching the product on Kickstarter and raising enough funds, to making sure the vessel would boil effectively and efficiently to the perfect temperature of 94C. Making sure the design was viable for the market by not compromising on the quality of the material used and the way it was manufactured was very difficult but we got there in the end.
