| DESIGN NAME: Play and Swim PRIMARY FUNCTION: Swimming Center INSPIRATION: There are thousands of swimming and amusement facilities in Taiwan but none of them is professional and particular for children under 3 years old. Our client who had lived in UK for years came back to Taiwan and expected to build a professional swimming pool with education, culture, art and sports functions for the training and development of five senses for little swimmers in age 0-3. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The entire space keeps the childlike atmosphere but not childish in order to present the professional quality of swimming pool for pre school children. The wallpapers decorated on the wall in the play space does not use bright colors nor cute styles, but use the abstract and silhouette of style against the light to create the vision of forests, animals, sky, and etc. It will inspire children's visual thinking and imagination through abstract and concrete decoration. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Designer created a curved lines which looks like smiling face to welcome the clients at the entrance. Further to the wall decorated with the smile lines and some inlaid mental silver wires in wavy shape next to the front desk introduces the image and softness of small waves on the surface of the water in the swimming pool. The other wall decorated with shells in a pure and white texture shows the purity of water and enhances the professional quality of the swimming pool. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The long corridor taking the advantages of cathedral ceiling of patio and full daylight of Taipei Arena is built to be an L-shaped long grille that is not just connecting with the rest space but creating fine transparency of this space. The rest area includes an internal play space for children and an external waiting room for parents. The sound stage sliding doors can create different specifications of spaces to meet the requirement of various activities. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The indoor area is approximately 700 square feets. TAGS: little swimmers, children swimming pool, development of five senses, water wonderland RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design of light in this project is the spotlight; the sparkling rotating light and inlaid light on the side wall not just enlarge the space in vision but create the festive sense of swimming pool particularly. Designer also choose cation warm water which can fully protect the fragile skin of newborn baby and children. Different heights of washstands, lockers and diaper space are user friendly for everyone. The round and long cabinet counter tops create a soft atmosphere to make children feel no pressure and willing to play in the water. CHALLENGE: This project is located in the basement of Taipei Arena. It is a huge challenge for design team to arrange the planning of space, the trend of pipelines and the place of boiler for building a professional swimming pool under the large building volume of Taipei Arena. Moreover, it takes time for procedures of communicating and negotiating with the administrative units of the department of Rapid Transit Systems Taipei City Government (DORTS), Taiwan Water Corporation, and Taipei Arena.
