| DESIGN NAME: Rui Lei Cafe PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Shop INSPIRATION: Designer is inspired by the technique mortise and tenon joints of China traditional architecture and uses dozens of solid wood sticks imported from Russia in the specification of 20 x 20 and 10 x 10 cubic meters to hang, mortise and arrange stick by stick. The sticks are hanged in layers to create a look like the tempo of water boiling in brewing coffee and densely arranged buildings in the urban area of Shenyang. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: While the Chinese architecture element meets the Western Coffee culture, what will the space being created? This old house had been transformed and recreated as a coffee shop with new look; the entire space is decorated by plenty of imported woods and stylish art decorations. Re planned interaction flow and the applications of building materials enlarge this space in vision. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The wooden stage decorated by some dining tables and seats with imported leather is combined with solid wood sticks of Southern pine and Designer uses different dark and light brown tones to create a visual image of coffee culture. The natural crack of wood can keep the wood flavor inside and that is the reason why main decoration is made of woods. It will complete a natural sound field effect plus the design of rear wall in arc shape. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2017 and finished in February 2018 in Shenyang city, China. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interior Space and Exhibition Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The central wooden column connected to the hanging solid wood column is the visual focus of entire design. Upright wooden column connected to the solid wood column on the ceiling and the coffee beans on the ground represents the image that the coffee is ready to serve and poured into the cup. Designer uses the image to describe the ritual of brewing coffee ,beginning from roasting the coffee beans, grinding coffee, brewing coffee until the coffee is ready to serve. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The indoor area is approximately 120 square feets. TAGS: wooden sticks, coffee, traditional architecture technique, cultural space RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The image built make people gain more imagination. The streamlining design of book cabinet is a complete connection to the point, line and plane of the hanging solid wood stick on the wooden stage. Also, the complex pipe lines and electric mechanical devices are cleverly hidden. All the detail upgrade the space from visible culture image, fresh coffee flavor, and comfort music to invisible cultural literacy which is made of people and knowledge bloom. CHALLENGE: The characteristic and highlight of space can be easily showed up if the design meets owners inspiration, even though time is short. This is the first time for design team cooperate with local construction team in Shenyang which is also a special experience of construction executed during frozen soil period in winter. It is a big test that the design team, the construction team and owner have efficient communication and trust toward each other.
