DESIGN NAME: Nature Base
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: After visiting the homeowners and discussing their habits, needs, and preferences of the existing living space, the design team brought the concept of humanity into the residence based on the planned space layout of one large room, two studies, one living room and one dinning kitchen. Yet, the order among them needed to be considered, so that the team would actively create perfect proportions of the interaction between the material and the light source.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: When the space was a pre-sale home, the couple who bought the property commissioned the designer to make changes. The case located at the Beitou District, Taipei, Taiwan. As the building is in relatively humid surroundings, the selection of materials is particularly crucial. After the design, abundant sunlight and greenery in the surroundings are introduced without hindrance through the openness of living room and dining room and a series of large windows. The natural features of the outdoor environment are brought into the interior as the main daily scene of life.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The space located in a newly-built, single-story apartment building equipped with elevators. With the establishment of open circulation lines, the large-scale front window views blur the intersection of boundaries, functions, and circulation lines and improve the chances of communication and interaction, effectively connecting the living room, dining room and outdoor extensive landscape to express the balance among humans, nature and environmental development and the relationship of mutual respect.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2017 and finished in February 2018 in Taipei city.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Diatomaceous earth, chiseled stones, wire-brushed paulownia wood, and carbonized smoked oak are utilized in the entire space. Through the lap of various natural textures, lightweight body imagery is created on the structure of lines, heights, and interfaces. In addition, through moisture-proof carbonized smoked oak and natural calming colors, the floor corresponds to the climatic conditions of the environment, highlighting a progressive spatial level in a subtle manner.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The indoor area is approximately 185 square feets.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Before the design, it was learned that the male owner enjoyed collecting new artist works and the female owner possessed an area of paper sculpture design. Therefore designer segmented the space into a large room, exclusive study rooms for male and female homeowners, and an independent storage/display area for paintings and books, and the entire spatial expressions are rendered with shades of extreme contrasting colors.
CHALLENGE: The floor level of the terrace area is deliberately designed to be lowered, with carbonized wood flooring and garden landscaping to present the fun of life. In the dining room, the main wall crafted with wire-brushed paulownia wood, together with the TV wall, delivers a creative visual effect which also symbolizes the intimate relationship between the environment and the house.
