DESIGN NAME: Mleiha Bowl
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dinning Tray
INSPIRATION: The proposed design looks at the landscape of the desert of Mleiha (UAE), where the ancient country of Magan (2,500 B.C.) settled down finding shelter from the harsh environment on the East side of Jebel Mleiha (Fossil Rock), protected from the sand dunes to create the fertile oasis of Al Madam.
The wooden tray replicates the topography of the sand dunes, accommodating several concavities to have dates or nuts.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Maleiha dates tray is a unique tray or bowl for dates and nuts.
Sculptural expressive, this 100% hand-made object touches the table in only three points of contact, making it into a light element.
The wood used for its fabrication (meranti) reinforces its texture and the idea of topography as a containing element.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The natural materials used for its design makes it a highly tactile object, where the scent and texture and the tray can be experienced through its sensual topography
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The tray was designed on site, from scrap. Asking the material: "what do you want to be? How do you prefer to be shaped?"
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design

CHALLENGE: The challenge, in this case, was to work without a pre-conceived idea, letting the material speak and suggest its shape and function.
