DESIGN NAME: Shine
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bottle Drying Rack
INSPIRATION: The product was designed to blend in with the rest of modern interior design and kitchen appliances. It has removable drying pegs which provide customizable configuration and collapsibility for easy storage. When babies grow up into toddlers, things that need to be cleaned and dried up change as well. Bottles become cups and silicone nipples becomes utensils. Just because babies grow up fast doesn’t mean parents need to throw out the products. The product extends its life as babies grow up.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Shine Bottle Drying Rack features a high performance, premium stainless steel design that dries up to eight bottles and accessories such as pump parts, bottle nipples, caps, collars, and cups. The convenient drip tray system collects excess water in the base to keep it away from clean items and off countertops. In addition, the durable and sturdy drying pegs fold completely flat for easy storage.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: With Shin Bottle Drying Rack, parents can effortlessly air dry baby bottles without a struggle to stacking the bottles up and having them fall down the floor. Tall and foldable drying pegs help to keep the bottles upright while perforated stainless steel plate brings the airflow to each item. The product is foldable which means it can be easily stored away when it is not in use and take up less space for valuable kitchen space.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2015 in Los Angeles and finished in October 2016 in Los Angeles, and it has received an IDA International Design Awards Silver in Children's Product Category in May 2018.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The researches included field research, market analysis, competitor product research, user researches. Prototypes were made with 3D printing, foam boards, wood, plastic, and urethane. Researches and interviews were recorded with cameras and video recorders. 3D CAD and engineering were done with Solidworks. A focus group of parents with babies were invited to test the product prior to the production stage, and some parents found the product useful for other purposes such as drying coffee cups, mugs, sports bottles, and record players.
CHALLENGE: The cost was one of the greatest challenges as the product cannot be too expensive for parents from the practical and utility points of view, yet the product needs to include a grade 304 stainless steel part, which style and function needed to be integrated with the rest of the product.
The second challenge to design and develop was to come up with simple, yet strong hinge and hinge stopper for folding pegs as its folding feature needs to hold heavy glass bottles and it should not collapse easily.
