DESIGN NAME: Omdanne
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Convertible Biodegradable Clothing
INSPIRATION: The fashion industry is the second most pollutant industry in the word, after the oil industry. Fast fashion is flooding the market with new clothing products every other two weeks. But every garment that is flooding the market, subsequently floods the environment with waste and harmful chemicals. Every year we produce 53 million tons of clothing of which 87% ends in landfill, becoming waste and eliminating methane, a dangerous greenhouse gas, affecting the quality of life of future generations
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Omdanne is a first of its kind collection, consisting of three pieces of clothing that can each transform into over 10 different styles. Its multifunctional design discourages consumption as one piece can become: jumpsuits, dresses, blouses, cape, jacket, trousers or boleros. All three pieces are 100% compostable; thus, they become nutrients to the soil instead of polluting textile waste. The designer made use of natural, renewable resources and product life cycle traceability to ensure a clean closed-loop fashion system.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Each garment can be transformed into over 10 styles that include: jumpsuits, dresses, blouses, cape, jacket, trousers or boleros. You can follow the step by step videos on the studio’s website or create new styles according to you own fashion sense. The garments are fixed in place with the detachable magnets. The clothes are machine washable at 30 degrees. At the end of the garment’s use, after many years, you dispose of it by placing it in compost or soil.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Overall, the design and implementation process lasted 1.5 years, in Herning, Denmark and was exhibited in "Future of Fashion & Technology" in September 2018 at the MAS Museum in Antwerp.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Made from 100% Tencel Lyocell fiber, OEKO-TEX 100 certified.
Accessories: 10 block powerful magnets that are detachable so that the clothes can be safely composted at the end of their life cycle. Because the magnets are not fixed, it offers the user endless options for how to wear the garments.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The garments are 100% biodegradable in soil and safe for composting. The fabric shows intense signs of bio-degradation in standard soil after just 4 weeks (see presentation photo); full decomposition in 8 to 9 weeks.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research question was: How can a fashion collection be developed that would create zero waste while discouraging consumption trough user -participatory design. The following methods were used: Design DNA analysis, User Centered Design, Design Thinking, Biomimicry, The Circular Economy Fundamentals, Life Cycle Mapping, 2D Sketching, 3D Sketching. Adjacent 4 ISO methods for testing the quality levels of textiles were applied. The result is a multifunctional, compostable capsule collection.
CHALLENGE: The designer set out to face two major challenges: of designing pieces of clothing that were extremely functional, easily incorporated into any existing wardrobe and truly versatile; the second challenge was to obtain information about the processes, chemical reactions and solvents used for the production of the fiber and later on the textile. The designer needed to make sure that the fabric was safe, with no toxic chemicals involved so that it could be composted at the end.
