DESIGN NAME: HMV Cigar and Wine Bar
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Restaurant
INSPIRATION: As Shanghai’s business district gains more cosmopolitan appeal, the location has everything going for it. In turning this entire-floor site into the ultimate entertaining venue, the design intends to realize the potential of its soaring ceilings and open plan, one that is formal enough to entertain high-profile clients and executives, but with enough party-ready panache for groups of friends.Lunchtime is full of energy, morphing into chatty happy hours and wine-fueled dinners.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: On the top floor of a glass-clad skyscraper, it is a shiny new restaurant on the riverside in Shanghai. Its split floor plan comprises agrown-up restaurant downstairs and an intimate lounge for a loft. Divided spaces give balance, fromlow round tables by picture windows, tall stools along the bar, or the double-ceilinged dining room with a long communal table, enjoying panoramic views via private terraces. The loft is a speakeasy-like cigar room, furnished with plush sofa sand retro touches.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Divided dining spaces, from the communal table, tall stools to small tables along the windows, give balance to the restaurant and maximise enjoyment of the panoramic vistas from wraparound terraces. Blessed with beautiful soft lighting in the evening and perfect acoustics, the venue is formal enough to entertain business events, but with enough character for groups of friends.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2016 and finished in Septermber 2017 in Shanghai, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The team accessorized without distracting from the site’s greatest asset: wraparound views of the urbanscape. Sultry ighting and textured surfaces add luxe touches. To keep the space open and roomy, an underlying neutral color palette is adopted, except for the velvet furniture in cobalt blue. Burnt yellows are used in every space for a sense of continuity. Dark slate and polished stone, both enduringly stylish and wear-resistant, are used extensively.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: On the top floor of a glass-clad skyscraper, it is a shiny new restaurant on the riverside in Shanghai. Occupying the top floor in a glass-facade skyscraper, the site has a split floor plan, a restaurant downstairs and alounge on the loft, with a neutral palette and surfaces like tinted mirrors and stone, accessorisedjudiciously without distracting from the panoramic vistas. An eclectic display wall, cushy velvet seats in vivid hues and coffered lights on the 6m ceiling are key visual elements.
Given the picture windows and soaring ceiling, a split floor plan is chosen to capitalise the site’s potential as the ultimate entertainment venue. The bar’s lowered ceiling is compensated by tinted mirrors and artistic lighting. To avoid the staircase feeling too boxed-in, the geometric shelving behind that bar is equipped with recessed lights to serves as a the source of illumination

CHALLENGE: Given the sites’ picture windows and soaring ceiling, a split floor plan is chosen to fully capitalisesits spatial potential. To compensate for the modest ceiling height at the bar (a trade-off for adding a loft), darkmirrors are used above to create height. To avoid the staircase feeling too boxed-in, the geometric shelving behind that bar is equipped with recessed lights to serves as a stylish divider, as well as the source of illumination.
