| DESIGN NAME: Mr Hip Stylist PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multiple Piercing Earrings INSPIRATION: Multiple ear piercings stem from an alternative culture in the past but in recent decades have moved into mainstream. Piercings today are just a form of self expression,the majority with multiple piercings style their ears with a combination of studs or hoops which in turn can be restricted aesthetically. There's an opportunity to push the design that could only be worn by people with multiple pierced ears, a look that single piercing earrings can't achieve due to a simple reason of gravity. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Designed especially for multiple ear piercings. Unlike single piercing earrings where the form of the earring's main purpose is to be aesthetically appealing. For multiple piercing earrings, due to various ear sizes and distances between ear holes, many designs resort to chains as a solution for easy production which in turn restricts the design. The body of this earring through its simple form fits harmoniously with the ergonomics of the ear, the adjustable chain accommodate various ear sizes and distances. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: First time, require to find the right distance to fix spring to chain on earring back 1. Put on helix stud and earring back with chain. 2. Fix long earring panel on lobe piercing and secure with earring back. 3. Rotate panel and use spring to secure to chain at desired length. (distance varies depending on location of helix piercing and ear sizes) From second time- leave spring secure to chain at correct distance and remove earring back from helix stud. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The first version started in early 2017 in Beijing, officially completed and available for sale online in Jan 2018. |

I found most solutions resolve to clip on solutions to the cartilage or chains so that the earring can be flexible to fit different ear sizes as well as accommodate the various distances between ear holes. CHALLENGE: The creative challenge for me was this. People have different ear sizes but this isn't a problem for single piercing earring design as the form isn't affected by different ear sizes as long as it hangs on this one hole. With multiple piercing earrings though, as it connects the lobe to the top piercing, the form had to work with different ear sizes and various distances between the ear holes. The chain and the spring solution solves the flexibility issue and easy production at the same time.
