| DESIGN NAME: Femme Fatale Meets Tomboy PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ready-to-Wear Collection for Women INSPIRATION: Here are keywords of my inspiration for this project; Gender, Male Chauvinism, Gender Discrimination, Social Issue, Sexism, Feminist, and Empowering Women. Here are the inspiration questions; Why do women have to be a minor role in society? Why are women sexually targeted in society? Why are women treated as the weaker gender compared to men? UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project, the collection, is created for empowering women. By applying Men's traditional tailoring elements such as wide shoulders, thick shoulder pads, bespoke finishes, and using Italian high-end fine cloths for men's suits into women's wear, women's suits that we created have more powerful looking than regular suits for women. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Silhouettes for this collection, I got inspired by 1980's power shoulder and men's wear tailoring suits. By applying bold and wide shoulder, customers can feel stronger and empowered by wearing my collections make feel empowered. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2017 in New York and finished in September 2017, and was showcased in Vancouver Fashion Week in September 2017 and New York Fashion Week in Feburary 2018. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Technique : Tailoring, Hand sewing, machine sewing, hammering. Fabric : Italian Nappa leather , Super 100's wool by Scabal, 100% silk lining. Trims : High shine nickel eyelets and High shine nickel chains. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The garments are in US size 0-2, EU size 34. TAGS: CHAEnewyork, Empowering women, Tailoring, Suiting, Gender, Gender Discrimination, Social Issue, Sexism, Feminist RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the 21st century, we as woman still experience a huge social issue in everyday life. It seems as if there is no more gender discrimination in society, but it still exists. In asian culture especially, the root of male chauvinism is placed so deeply from a long history and culture. That women are suffering from this cultural background. Women are still not recognized as a major member of society. Men and a large portion of society still think that women should stay home and do house duties. Why do women have to live their lives like that? Now is the time to change and empower women. A woman is strong. All gender has to be treated equally. Can't change the world right away, but can feel stronger and empowered by wearing garments make feel empowered. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge for this collection was fabrications and finding right hardware materials. Using Nappa leather for tailoring blazer is not usual because bespoke tailoring is all finished by handle through long experiences artisans. It takes triple times to construct this leather blazer. Plus, the silver eyelets are for bags and accessories which are not usually used in Clothing due to its application. All holes are hand punched and hammered by hand. CHAEnewyork is focused on Tailoring based silhouette and luxury high-quality European Men's clothes. CHAEnewyork was founded in 2017 by Carolina Chae Yoo, the creative director, founder and graduate of Parsons the New School for Design with BFA Fashion Design Degree. Born in South Korea, she spent her adolescence in the states until she decided to move to New York for her education and began her career working at luxury brands such as Alexander Wang, Michael Kors collection, Sally Lapointe, and Lie Sang Bong. In 2017, Chae and her brand, CHAEnewyork were selected and won as the Golden Award Winner by A’design Award & Competition in Milan, Italy and nominated and selected as one of the most innovative Korean Global Fashion Designers by renowned Korean Media, Chosun. In 2018, Chae was ranked among the top 10 designers who competed in the apparel design awards hosted by the A’Design award & Competition and DAC in the last 9 years. CHAEnewyork has showcased its collections in Milan at the MOOD-Museum of Outstanding Design, New York Fashion Week and Vancouver Fashion Week. The brand continues to present its seasonal collections on global stages while utilizing New York as its home base. |
