INSPIRATION:
Shiwu Resort Hotel is originally a Hakka walled village which was built in Qing Dynasty. The Hakka walled village retains the architectures which have been certified as historical relics, including a tower for war defense, an ancestral temple for religion worship and the houses for daily living. Hakka is a community in South China and it has its unique social customs and daily habits.

After historical restoration covering both the interiors and the facades of the buildings, the results speak for themselves. Shiwu Resort Hotel not only occupies a unique space in resort hotels of Guangzhou that offers guests a one-of-a-kind experience, but also the project itself is having a significant and positive effect on the city with both other developers and government officials re-evaluating the potential and value that exists in heritage building. With their extraordinarily thorough green initiatives, Shiwu Resort Hotel embodies its purpose in creating a sustainable environment.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
With multiple open courtyards and patios, the houses are adorned with ponds and gentle landscaping, showing the architectural concepts of Hakka. The interconnecting structures creates a layered effect and a natural experience for guests, unveiling new spaces, levels and ambiances at every turning.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The architectures need to be renovated as they were ages ago. Based on the consideration of sustainable development, the client requests to retain the original architectural features and reconstruct as a rural boutique hotel. On the basis of the original houses, the designer combines new and old elements, mixing modern fashion with traditional architectural style of Hakka, then the old houses are refreshed and added with new flavor of modernized architecture.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Shiwu Resort Hotel is located in Deng Village, which is about 80 kilometers from Guangzhou City. Uniquely situated near the famous tourist attractions - Whitewater Village and Nankun Mountain National Forest Park, Shiwu Resort Hotel is surrounded by bamboo forest and natural pond. Eight ancient buildings of Shiwu Resort Hotel have 41 bedrooms, equipped with a reading house, a cafe, a children's playroom and an exhibition hall. RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
On the basis of the original houses, the designer combines new and old elements, mixing modern fashion with traditional architectural style of Hakka, then the old houses are refreshed and added with new flavor of modernized architecture. Shiwu Resort Hotel fully embodies the hakka regional culture, such as local residential culture elements, and guides the development of boutique hotel.

CHALLENGE:
The Hakka features run through the concept and outline the characteristics of traditional architecture with modern design language. Understated art collections provide visual attraction in public spaces, while arranging skillfully of countryside objects that evoke visitors' feeling of living in the countryside. The living room and bedroom are separated by modern Chinese partition, forming the area as an intercommunicated but relatively private. The original grey brick walls which are protected by holistic wooden furniture, provide the ancient ambiance.
