DESIGN NAME: BO-007
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bollard
INSPIRATION: Cities currently face the challenge of redistributing public spaces to favor pedestrians. Our contribution to this vision of humanized cities is a bollard that delimits and protects pedestrian zones as well as ordering and beautifying the urban environment.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The BO 007 bollard plays the role of both protector and mediator in the everyday urban scene. With this in mind, it is designed to help it blend into any urban setting. Its slim yet robust structure culminates at the top where it features a radial cut out pattern that diffuses towards the edges. This provides a particularly attractive shape that can be appreciated from all angles. Its tubular steel contour sports a reflective strip whose purpose takes center stage in low-light conditions.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design of this product allows both motorists and pedestrians to view it from any angle thanks to its reflective surface. It is also a durable and affordable option that does not require any electrical installation.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The BO 007 was designed and developed in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, beginning in September 2016 and ending in February 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: BO 007 is produced in carbon steel tube and its pattern has a three-dimensional laser cut out. Its tube features a galvanized and polyester powder coating finish to withstand the natural environment. The pattern cut out has an engineering-grade reflective strip inside to make it visible from any angle and prevent vandalism.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Material: Carbon steel and engineer-grade reflective strip; Weight 9kgs; Width 90mm x Height 960mm x Depth 90mm; Finish: Galvanized with dark gray polyester powder coating.
TAGS: Bollard, urban furniture, street furniture, Mexican design, industrial design.
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: For developing this product, it was necessary to analyze the behavior of drivers as well of pedestrians, also important to take note of all existing bollards in the city. Based on that experience we discovered that over time the bollards lose the reflective strip either due to weather or vandalism; in response to this problem the bollard BO-007 contains the reflective strip inside the steel body in order to avoid its detachment.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to create an accessible product, with little or no maintenance, that does not require any electrical installation and would contribute to the city trend to regain public areas for pedestrians. All these characteristics had to come together in an aesthetic, functional product that could be adapted to any city setting.
